No heat

April 9th, 2014 at 06:41 pm

I got up yesterday morning to NO heat! Since I am on medication for my heart, I am cold all the time.
My husband had checked the propane tank about a month ago, and it showed 30%.
He checked it again yesterday, again 30%. Then he banged on it. The needle went to 0%.
I got 300 gallons delivered. (We have a 1000 gal. tank) That 300 gallons was almost $900. I sure hope the price goes down this summer. We paid $2.76 a gallon. At least I am warm now.

Hey Julie.....I too heat with propane and locked in at $2.19/gallon during a summer promotion. I felt pretty fortunate. However, even with keeping my thermostat at 65 degrees and using only one of two furnaces, I averaged about $500.00 per month. I should add, however, that in Rochester, NY, we endured one of the coldest, snowiest, miserable winters ever!!!!!!! You know it's bad when you wish it would hit zero so it would feel warmer. I hate the idea that the girls have to "bundle up" in their own home, but man oh man, I just can't afford to spend any more on propane.

This summer I am going to revisit door insulation, caulking needs, etc. I am even going to sew some of those socks you put at the bottom of your doors.

If anyone has other thoughts on making the house more comfortable during the frigid weather, bring 'em on. Jamie

Gosh, that sounds cold! I kept my thermostat on 64 degrees until I got sick. Now I have to keep it on 70, even with a coat and sweater on. Let's hope we have a warmer winter next time.

More heat is worth it for your health! Take care, Julie.

I don't use the propane heater for my apartment. I only use a hot oil radiator heater in my living room.

    Mooshocker,

Do you have leaks at the windows? Have you considered covering windows with plastic? Can you put those sand-sock things (tubes with sand) to block cold air coming in warm out air? Close off rooms not in use? If you have a basement, do you block the door to avoid air escaping down?

Can your utility company to an energy audit to see if the heat is escaping?

Ima, I'm with CCF - more heat, even if it's expensive - is way worth it!
