stolen again

March 4th, 2012 at 06:21 pm

A few years ago, dh built two deer feeding troughs. He buys corn and feeds many deer every night.
Last fall, one of the feeders disappeared. We have never seen it again.
Last night, the remaining feeder disappeared. We are sure no person is taking them; it must be a bear. We have a large yard with over 500 feet on the creek and we can not find it anywhere.
Poor deer, I don't know where they will eat tonight??

I ran to Bi Lo this morning and picked up several items on sale, total savings, $5, which I will add to the challenge!

Prev. total $3557.00
today 5.00
new total $3562.00

Hmm, that sounds very strange. Why would a bear make off with the feeder? If one did, I would think you'd be able to find it not too far off, after any feed in it was dumped.

A deer feeder would probably work well to feed other livestock, or perhaps as a planter. Were they near a road or visible from a road? I'm a little suspicious still.

No, the deer feeders were right behind the house, near the creek. Really, not visable from the road at all.
We thought we would find it somewhere near the creek, but we didn't, unless it floated away.

Maybe the bear wanted to steal the feeder to see if he could move it and take it to his den and have deer come by so he could deer watch...kidding, of course! Who knows with wild life?

You could try cabling the feeders to a nearby thick tree. That way if something or someone tries to make off with it they'd have a hard time unless they had bolt cutters or heavy duty wire cutters. We did this with our outdoor standing Christmas displays when we had a theft problem. One never walked off again. You can get pre-cut cabling with loops on the end and simple locks at Lowe's or Home Depot.
