Sure they can make a profit!!

November 17th, 2010 at 09:17 pm

In yesterday's blog, I discussed that I was upset with a former customer of ours.
They hired dh to build them a cabin. The now have it up for sale for more than double what they paid for it. I certainly do believe that it is their right to make as much profit on the cabin as they can.

What I object to, they told the realtor that my husband charged them $188,000 to build the cabin, when in reality, he only charged them $65,000 for the cabin; everything, labor and materials.

It sounds like the cabin cost over $200 a square foot to build, when it actually cost $80 a square foot.
Realtors sell land too, and are often asked to reccommend a good builder. I don't think we would get many reccommendations if the realtor thought my husband was overcharging.

Actually, I have been told by the past 2 homes that we built, that my husband was very reasonable in his hourly wage. (I say we, cause I handle all the money; my dh handles the building) Works great!

You have every right to be upset about that! It's simply not true and it affects his reputation. It does sound like he has quite a good following though, so maybe this isn't such a huge blow? Smile

It was my understanding (according to your previous post) that the owner said that they were selling it for what they have in it, not that it is the price your husband charged to build it. They may very well have that in it with the land improvements etc. It's really their business what they sell it for and since your husband has a great reputation no realtor would believe that anyway.

No, the owner told the realtor that that was what they paid for the home. They have not added anything to the property; no garage, no out buildings. They paid $20,000 for the lot and paid dh $65,000 for labor and materials. I don't care what they sell it for, but don't tell everyone that you paid $188,000 for a home and land that cost you $85,000.
No, I don't this would hurt his reputation.

This is only their vacation cabin. They have not improved on the property at all.

Sounds like your DH has a great reputation. Maybe it really is time to raise his fee a bit. Smile
