Do kids still walk to school??

April 19th, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I am curious, do kids still walk to school. I moved from Norfolk, Va. to Florida when I was in 3rd grade. From then on, I had to walk to school until I was a senior and had my own car. (which I paid for all by myself) The bad part about it was I had to carry lots of heavy books cause I did a lot of studying. I guess that is why most kids were not overweight back then.
I got a check in the mail for $55 today to pay me back for a car tow I had last month. I will use that, the $1 for the braves win and $2 for a no use gas day yesterday, to add to the challenge.
Prev. total $7550.00
today 58.00
new total $7608.00

A few do here. All children in our school district can ride the bus, even if they live across the street from the school. My girls ride the bus, but we are over two miles from school and there is an interstate to cross with no sidewalks. Not safe.

My kids walk to school. They would anyway, the school is just down the street, but there is no bus service in our district this year (budget and all).

I was bused K-8 but walked to my high school since it was within walking distance.

P.S. The high school is over the interstate. You couldn't pay me to walk over there. Big Grin So, not sure how that will work but we got a few years to work it out. May be driving the kids and dropping them off on the corner on the other side of the freeway? Or they may get a bus, by then.

my high school was a 30 minute drive from our house, so I caught a bus. I do remember when we did live within walking distance I walked, when I was in year 4. I think the walk took me half an hour.

I work in suburban elementary schools and plenty of student walk to school. Many of them are accompanied by their parents. There are also plenty of parents dropping kids off too.

I just remembered my friend took the city bus in high school. I don't think we have a city bus that comes to our neck of the woods though - I suppose that may change eventually, too.

    Around here they sure don't..
I live less than a mile from a school, no one walks.

Where we live children walk to school unless they live out of town then there are buses. I drop my son off since he is only 6.

My son has issues with attention so I could see him stopping to play along the way and getting to school an hour or so late so I will not let him walk until he matures a bit.

Once he gets to be 9 I will let him walk home from school, but not to school unless he matures quiet a bit between now and then. It is my job as his parent to make sure he gets to school and on time and I cant do that unless I drop him off on the way to work. Maybe in the future when he is older it might be another story.
