We have a new Walmart!

September 3rd, 2009 at 07:05 pm

For the first time that I have lived in this area, (25 years), we have a wal mart. Before this, we had to drive to North Carolina to shop at Wal Mart. I did that a few times a year.
So, I thought I would start doing my grocery shopping at Wal Mart to save money.
That did not work out. They either did not have the brands I wanted or they only carried the brand in a superduper size. We are a family of 2; we do not need a gallon of log cabin syrup.
So back to Ingles I went today. I saved $6 using my advantage card and the bonus 5% off card that came in the mail.
so that is $6 more to add to the challenge.
Prev. total $13,039.00
today 6.00
new total $13,045.00

I have 2 walmarts that I can get to in my area relatively easily.

I am actually eager to find one of those walmarts that has groceries! (actual veggies and fruits).

Has anyone been to one? Are the deals great?

I find that I spend around the same amount of money whether I shop at Walmart or Albertson's (local grocery chain here). I like the meat and produce at Albertson's better than Walmart.

We dont have any of those really great grocery stores here so Wal-Mart is so much cheaper than the grocery store.

I will go into the grocery store to buy the loss leaders and my son will see something and sadly 95% of the time the answer is wait till we get to Wal-Mart it is so much cheaper there.

Our walmart is in the process of adding on a grocery section. It should be open in the next month or two. I'm excited - but I wont do all of my shopping there. Walmart usually has better "every day" prices on things around here, so I'll go there for those things. Sale items I can still do MUCH better at the grocery store. I tend to buy flour/sugar/other baking stuff at Walmart though. I'll be happy to have a bigger selection.

There is a lot fo Wal-Marts along my merchandising route, and I like some things form there. However, I use coupons and rebates a lot, and since I am near all types of stores, I do better shopping the sales at all stores, when I am home. I am in a hotel a lot, so don't really buy that much, as it is just me.

We have a "psuedo" super Walmart, not as good as a real super Walmart and I find they are out of stuff all the time. They did'nt have any chocolate chips the other day. Oh well!

They are definitely NOT always cheaper, but they will price match other store ads, so you could try that. I usually don't unless I just don't feel like stopping at another store for 1 or 2 things. I make my list, and then go back over it & put a "W" by things I know are cheaper there, and other initials for whichever other stores I'm stopping at that week if I know the items are cheaper there.

I don't criticize those who shop at Walmart, but I cannot support that company. Their employment practices are abhorent. To ensure highest profits (which I'm not generally opposed to), they keep most of their jobs as part time and do not provide medical benefits. They have a terrible track record on sex discrimination in pay, promotion, and compensation, wage abuse, exclusion of contraceptive coverage in insurance plans, violations of child labor laws and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Cases have also been filed regarding firing pro-union workers, eliminating jobs once workers joined unions, and discouraging workers from unionizing.

To me, there is no price break on a pack of toilet paper that would make supporting them with my money an acceptable thing.

Walmart has good everyday prices. I like to buy their food seasonings there as they are really resonalbe. I hate paying alot for a seasoning and then its shelf life goes before I use it.

I have actually found that buying the small plastic packages of brand Badia to be very cost conscience as you're buying smaller quantities.

You have to find the items that you want from Walmart.

seven of seven: i recently read a book called the Walmart Effect, which had a lot of info on what you just said in your comment. we don't have walmart in australia, but it is interesting all the same. one thing i read also, was that some managers LOCKED their employees INSIDE over night to stock shelves etc. WHAT! how crazy is that? they would not last a second here.
