I hope I did not make anyone mad!

August 7th, 2009 at 06:09 pm

I hope I did not make anyone mad about my post about cell phones yesterday. I realize that they are wonderful in an emergency, but some people I know just can't afford them.
I know a couple in their mid forties. They have a teenage daughter. They have no checking account and no saving account, but they all have cell phones. To me, a cell phone is a luxury item.
I guess the neat thing about everybody having one, is that in an emergency, I can borrow someone else's phone!!

It is not a necessity in a true sense, but for 2 young professionals in a big city is is pretty convenient. with long commutes, complicated schedules, business travel... it is a great time saver.

And it is expected in a modern workplace. You don't want to be explaining your views on cell phones to every single person you meet professionally or socially.

Your lady painter should have gotten a bluetooth. That way both her hands would be free to work.

It's your blog and you can say whatever you want on it so express to your heart's content! I agree with you about the cell phones. I was on the bus one day coming home from work and two guys were discussing their "goods" that they had gotten at the food bank from whence they were coming. Then one pulled out his cell phone and started texting. I thought, you have got to be kidding me, he can't afford to shop for groceries but he can afford a cell phone? Needless to say, I no longer send a check to the food bank as I am not inclined to underwrite freeloaders (and yes, one person can spoil it for everyone.) I am also at my limit with this "entitlement mentality" which, unfortunately this present administration isn't doing anything but reinforcing. Oh well, what are you gonna do?

I have a cell and went for the absolute cheapest way I could figure out to have one, so it's pay-as-you-go. It's for emergencies, but I do find myself calling for pleasure on it more often than I'd like to. Sometimes it's for stupid things that could certainly wait until I got home to tell the person there or to use my landline phone to call someone at no extra charge. Some people do have them instead of landline phones, so the food bank beneficiaries might have been in that situation. But I agree in general that the whole overuse of them annoys me. Many, many people that can't afford them have them and overuse them. Necessity in some places? Sure. But is the latest and greatest and most expensive phone ever a necessity? I doubt it.

My dh and I both have cell phones we use them rarely. We hired a painter to paint a room and he spent so much time checking his phone, talking, etc. Fortunately he was paid by the job, not the hour. The odd thing was one evening he went outside to his truck and was out there over 30 minutes. Seems his wife called and they had a screaming match. He came in and said he was too upset to paint. Why would someone call someone at their job and pick a fight?

Fortunately, in Illinois, we have a brand new law that makes it illegal to text while driving. You can text if you are on the side of the road and your car has to be in park. It's sad when the legislators have to create a law for common sense and safety.

I go to work around 7 in the morning and cannot for the life of me figure out who all the folks are talking to at that hour while driving! Maybe I don't have enough to say...

Dont worry about it Smile I think cell phones can be a hot topic because people see them as a necessity. While extremely convenient, they technically aren't a necessity. I'm amazed how quickly we all have come to rely on them. And yes, I admit to being one who would not want to give up the cell phone!

I guess right now you just don't have the need for one. I first got mine about 6 or 7 years ago when I started making regular trips to my Mom's house which was 2 hrs and 15 minutes away.

There was one point where my Mom had been waiting for me to take her to an appointment that the nurse advised me to. I was almost late and she would have missed a critical appointment. Having the phone would have eased the minds of those waiting because I had gotten tied up in traffic that morning.

I also had to think about me being on the road and maybe needing the phone for any emergency and that did it for me.

I use mine vary rarely, but it has saved me time and money by calling instead of having to go back home for something.

It just depends on where you are in your life. I was also separated from my husband at the time, so that made a difference for me also.
