The tough don't go shopping!!

August 31st, 2008 at 01:41 pm

The economy is getting pretty bad in our area. I just noticed that a real estate company that has been here for ages, has closed down. No body is looking for real estate and no body is buying anything.
I have a friend who is experiencing some rough financial times right now. I know that this is depressing her right now but she is trying to work thru her depresssion by going shopping a lot.
I think we all should be saving as much money as possible right now.
When the going gets tough, the tough do NOT go shopping!!

My condolences. That would be heartbreaking to see.

maybe when she says she is going shopping you could distract her with afternoon tea somewhere (with items that you've both bought yourself of course!) or maybe a bushwalk or something like that. Smile

That's terrible. Many people shop to fill up a hole in their soul. Recessions often mean that people are depressed, with bigger holes to feed and no money to feed them.

Wow. Yeah, terribly dangerously, that habit.

    Well put baselle......

Yeah, I think that is very insightful of baselle. One obstacle keeping some people from addressing the problem is that they might not have really even noticed that there is a hole.

Since most of your friends read your blog, I can't help but wonder which one of us does all the shopping? Sure isn't me. I've picked up a few grocery items at the Farmers Market paying much less than if I bought them at the grocery store. Give us a hint!

Well, I am not trying to be critical, but, I do think a little compassion on your part would be nice. Depression is a terrible condition and people react differently to stress. You give great financial advice.
Why not leave the psychiatry to the pros?

ImaSaver is anonymous and I'm sure she has no intention of revealing her friend's identity either. Please respect the anonymity of both persons. If you are a friend who feels threatened by the fact that ImaSaver mentions her friends, please be assured that your own identity is unknowable, too. We have no idea who spechousewife is and no reason to wonder.

It is appropriate in a personal finances blog to take up the issue of personal spending and saving motivations. To note depression as being related to spending is not practicing psychiatry.

Nope Joan, you are wrong. Everyone in town knows who she is. This is a VERY small town. She states her real name above. We also know her friends as we are a small group. Perhaps she should only share her personal tips and not judge her friends. I don't believe she has a friend who shops to "work through her depression."
