What a rip off!

August 1st, 2008 at 02:05 pm

My dh went to the doctor yesterday. He has not had a colonoscopy in 8 years, so he decided it was time for one.
The doctor says he no longer does that procedure and dh will have to see another doctor the doctor #1 uses. So, dh pays the office visit of $45.
They set up an appt. with doctor #2 to JUST make an appt. to have the colonscopy at the hospital outpatient.
The cost for this appt. JUST ro make an appt., is $140! What a rip. This appt. for the colonoscopy could be made over the phone. Dr. #2 does not even need to see dh>

I need to have one too. I wonder if I could tag along and we could get 2 appts. for the same price?
The last one cost me $2000 and we have no insurance. I wonder what this one will cost??

That IS a rip off, but it's always good to get these things done.

    Ima,

Why no insurance? If it is the two of you (husband building houses your the accounts and billing person) the two of you would qaulify for a policy for about 180/month or less on a busines plan. then now worries about out of pocket costs. Just make sure to list two employees and you'll be cheaper than listing one employee and one dependent.

I would go ahead and try to negotiate the price. What would it hurt?

My doctor said you only needed one every ten years.

If they find polyps, you will need one every one or two years and for me, they did.
Debtfreeme, where could I find that kind of policy? We do have insurance on dh, but it is $10,000 deductible for $200 a month.

Look up small company insurance plans online and get some quotes.

Or ask your insurance agent to recommend a "Dealer" who specializes in insurance for companies between 2 and 100 employees. I used to work for one and they gave great rates to small business owners, of which you and your husband qualify if you have a business checking, incorporated or licensed in your area.

Your agent should be able to send you to a good place. One in California is Benefit Partners but i am not sure about Georgia. I am sure it is even cheaper since Georgia has a lower cost of living than California.

A test run gave me a 1000 deductible with a yearly fee of 495. Obviously it will be different but I would look into it.

You can check ehealthinsurance.com also to get a quote. I have health insurance for both of my children through Health America with no deductible and reasonable copays.
