The millionaire lady's husband

April 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Earlier I wrote a post about being called a millionaire lady! Now let me tell you what happened to my husband because of the way he dresses!
Neither of us dress up and dh wear work clothes. He is a carpenter. all of his work clothes have caulking or paint or something on them. I can buy him new, by tomorrow, those clothes look like work clothes with stains on them.

He has been having trouble with his work van since last summer. He has had it fixed, but the transmission is not working right, the heat and air don't work and it needs new tires. It has 150,000 miles on it.

He just took on a new house to build in the next state over. His old van is not going to make it, so it is time for new.
He stopped at the car place to talk about buying a brand new work van, and no one will even talk to him.
He is not dressed well enough. They don't think he can afford a new vehicle.

I remember when he tried to buy me a new vette for our 25th anniversary and no one would even bother with him.
This has happened at banks too, when we go into open an account that is paying a high rate. The lady will tell us, sorry but you can't open that account. You have to have $50,000 to open it! So I give her a check for $100,000.

I told him to go back to the dealership and talk to the manager! He would have bought one yesterday, if someone would quit treating him like he is just wasting their time.

So what if clothes are not our passion!!

Maybe he should tell the next car salesman that he is married to the millionaire lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think that will work???

Wow, one day I want to be able to write a check for $100,000.

It's a sad sad state of the world when someone will not talk to a person b/c of the clothes they wear.

He went there twice and no one will call him back at all.

How far are you willing to drive to pick up a car. Call dealerships within that area. Tell them you are going to buy a car this week. This is what I want. How much? The last three cars I bought were over the phone and they did not see us until we went in to actually pick them up and we didn't even pay cash.

That place would definitely not get my business. I would also stop by in my new van (purchased elsewhere) to rub in it a la Pretty Women. I have a running list of places I will not shop at due to awful customer service. Dh and I will not buy a vehicle at a dealership where the salesperson does not shake my hand when he/she shakes his.

Your husband's experiences remind me of a local tow truck company owner. This guy does not dress to match his net worth. People often make comments about why the company hires workers who do not dress nicer. Dh loves to tell them that the guy owns the company and has more money than they can imagine.

This dealership is already 25 miles away. We do not have a ford dealership anywhere close by!
Gosh, my husband is a hard worker and his clothes show it!!

I remember reading an article about the super rich buying megayachts. Well, the yacht part isn't important, but one of the sales people in the article being interviewed said that, by far, the richest customer he's ever ran into actually came in wearing a regular T-shirt and blue jeans. Even though he was a multi-billionare. Big Grin

Of course, there's also the famous story of Stanford University. The Stanfords went to Harvard University to discuss a possible endowment. Dressed simply, the Harvard representative assumed that they didn't have the money for it, citing that it would take "no less than $5 million". This was in the 1890s by the way. The Stanfords, after a few quick words, decided that if that was all there is to it, then they might as well start a college of their own. Big Grin

Finally, a quick thought. If you can help it, I would say go ahead and ignore the dealership. Anyone who doesn't want to give you the time of day just because of the way you look probably don't even deserve your business. But that's just me. Either that, or maybe you guys need to just show up with a briefcase full cash. Big Grin

This reminds me of the move "Pretty Women" where the lady wanted to buy new clothes now that she had the money to pay for them but they refuse her service because of the way she dressed/looked.

So much irony to it but unfortunately our general public is very superficial. While I can laugh about some ironic impressions but when someone confused a truly hard worker to be a penniless bum just by looking I cannot help but to think they are morons.

    Oh, they're total fools!

Since he probably doesn't want to try to make any statements but just wants to get a good van, I'd suggest he call around to a couple dealers and get the information he needs and work out any details over the phone, get the name of the salesperson, tell them his name and when he'll be going in, and then go in to the dealership.

My mother knew one of the richest men in town, and he drove a simple, old pickup truck and wore work clothes. His brother wore dressier clothes and had a nice car. People didn't realize that the first brother was the one who had the business sense and made the money. I lived on the wrong side of the tracks, but I knew of at least two other millionaires who had lived in the area. One served cake at my wedding. I once got the lookover when I was wearing work clothes and walked into an office uptown to use the phone after my car broke down. I realized that I probably knew as many millionaires as family friends as they did! My mom taught me through all that to not judge by appearance.

I can't believe that. I mean here in Boston it doesn't matter what you look like. The salespeople are over you like white on rice. But then again there are like 5 of every dealership in a 5 mile radius, so a lot of competition.

Maybe the millionaire lady should walk and with husband and say "who do I talk to about buying my handyman a van?" Big Grin Mind as well have some fun.

Or he could walk in and go to the most junior person there and give him the sale.

By the way, for the longest time, Ned Johnson (Fidelity Investments) drove like a 10 year old Volvo.

Also, George Putnam III (of Putnam Investments) drove a compact that was purple looking and had a big dent in it. He almost ran me down in Boston.

I bet if he drove up in the Corvette or one of your other fancy cars he'd get someone to sell to him. Though I rather like the handyman idea. Big Grin

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Drive your vet and him drive his old van over there and let him pull in the lot first when they come out to swarm
you, tell them 'that nice looking gentleman over there was here first.' See what happens.

Pain in the patooky!! Before you go I would call the management over it though and get myself a nice discount in the bargain for their discriminating behaviour.

It sucks that they treated your husband like that. But the ultimate revenge is giving your business to someone else.

we have that experiance at most places as well
we do not dress well, just Tshirts and jeans walmart shoes LOL

any place that has sales people totaly ignore us and we think it is funny, sometimes it is annoying but I think we actually get a kick out of being snubbed by people who think us poor ;-)
we have bought all of our motorcycles from the same dealership and they drop everything when we come in ,and it suprises the better dressed people around us
    ;-)
people in sales should no better but they don't I think people have a real misconception of what people who have money look like

you never know who you are talking to

I'm glad you shared this story. This is what you should do:
Do not go back to that horrible dealership until your husband has bought his new van elsewhere. Then drive up at the bad dealership in it; yes in the style of Pretty Woman.
That is disgraceful! Those guys don't desevere your money.

Funny about your husband and his work clothes. My dad is a plumber and owns his own company. He always works in an old sweatshirt and jeans, etc... The other day he was at Panera and went to pay and the guy in front of him paid for his food because he thought he was poor. Little did the guy know.
