I physically save

September 18th, 2007 at 05:04 pm

Someone asked me if I just save money on paper for the $20 challenge, or physically put the money away.
Everytime I blog about the $20 challenge I have the money, bills or checks, sitting right next to me.
When I finish my blog, I immediately go and put the cash/checks into a money box I keep in this room.
Once or twice a month, I take that money to the bank and put it in my money market account to earn 5.25% interest. I keep track of the amount on paper.
Today is one of those days. Got to go and get the money in the bank before 2 pm. bye!!

So for example, let's say DH wants to go out to eat and you insist on staying home instead. DH agrees. Do you take $20 (the amount you would have saved) out of your wallet or write yourself a check right then? So you're paying yourself to walk? Pardon the 20 questions, but I find it interesting...I've never thought in terms like these before.

    Cool, I wondered myself.

Yes, I take the $20 out of my wallet. I usually operate in cash only. He and I both get an allowance plus I have so much budgeted for food, electric, etc. If I use a coupon, I save that much money to put into the challenge. It my electric bill is under $160 that month, I take the amount that I saved from my budgeted amount and add it to the challenge. I pay myself $1 for every mile I walk or every 20 flights of stairs. I pay myself $1 everytime I have a no gas used day.

    It really adds up!

If you didn't pay yourself for these things, wouldn't you save it anyway? Or would you spend it?

Say, Ima, how many steps are in your flight? I was wondering 'cause I didn't want to go walk in the heat today, so instead I stepped up and down my aerobic block while watching TV. I got to wondering how many floors up and down I climbed.

From where do you get the dollar to walk a mile? Is it from money that would normally be put in a savings account, like money that is not earmarked for a certain category of your budget? Or is it from money already budgeted for such an expense?

I get the money from my allowance.

Ok, a normal flight of stairs is 16 steps, 16 x 20 flights are 320 steps.
