Wash in cold

March 19th, 2007 at 03:50 pm

I was watching a news program this morning and they interviewed a guy that just wrote a book. I wasn't paying attention and did not get the name of the book, but it was about ways you could save money on your electric bill each month.
One of the biggies was "always wash your clothes in cold water" He explained that the washing machine uses very little electric. It is the heating of the hot water that uses so much power.

Well, I have always washed in cold and my hot water heater is OFF 23 hours a day. I am saving money!

Sure you are. By washing full loads help too. Sometimes people wash small loads and that can be a waste of electricity.

We've always washed in cold water. Too tight to do otherwise. Also, if we don't have to use the dryer, we hang our clothers on hangers on the fence.
During the hotter summer months here in Utah, our clothing dries in less than an hour. Gotta love that solar power!

I wash bedding, underwear and kitchen towels in hot water to kill bacteria and dust mites (allergies) but everything else goes in cold.
