A side line plumbing job.

March 4th, 2007 at 02:09 pm

MY dh did a side plumbing job yesterday. We built the house for this guy, but he only uses it about one weekend a month. He leaves the water on and one of the pipes burst. (He had a slow leak outside, he plugged, it blew out and blew a pipe inside the house)
Luckily it did no damage inside, but needed to be fixed.
So my dh went over and worked on it all day yesterday.
I do his paycheck every sunday, so he will not get paid for yesterday from me. By the time he gets these sideline paychecks, it is time for a new pay day.
So, I never count those checks in my budget. I just add them to savings.

He is charging the man $150 for his labor. Since my husband is so handy, we have never hired a plumber or electrician. How much do most plumbers make? He was there for most of the day, plus made side trips to check out the problem last week. I think he is charging a fair fee, do you?

Say he did 8 hours that is $18.75 an hour, which isn't bad but it is it line with what that service gets on the market? The go look see calls have to be included in the time factor - that costs too! I'm assuming costs of materials are added to the charge (plus a small mark up for his time getting the material?)

I guess the real question is what does a plumber charge? Guess you could call a plumbing company or two and ask their rate for "come look at and quote" and for a house visit/per hour charge and make sure that it is in line.

Well, my husband pays his workers $18 an hour, and I think plumbers make a lot more than that??

Where I live a plumber, electrician, etc. charges about $100.00 just to walk in the door. It's more after the "service call" charge. You can charge what the going rate is in your area, but it is low compared to other areas of the country.

That is what I thought. I though charging $150 for all day was reasonable, plus he made one trip last week to look at the problem and another trip to home depot for what he needed to fix the problem.
