What cha going to buy??

March 3rd, 2007 at 02:47 pm

I am now receiving a monthly check that I have never received before. I mentioned that to my waitress last night and her first question was, "what cha going to buy with it?"
I said, I am not going to buy anything, I am going to save it.
She couldn't understand that and said "oh buy yourself something pretty"

After she left, my dh asked me if we were in about 5% of americans that cared more about saving then spending.
I told him no, I think there is a lot more than that, but probably only about 20-25% have our same mind set.
We started thinking about the people we knew, and could only come up with a few people that we knew that lived comfortably and had no money worries.
None of these people were "spenders"
I know one couple that we built a beautiful big house for.
He just retired from a big job with the state of Georgia and has a six figure retirement pay plus social security.

They do travel, they have parties, they have fun, but they do it all on a budget. They allow so much for these things and don't go overboard.

I guess for the rest of the people that we know, all they think about is what can they buy with their money.

Ima, I think that the 5% must be on this forum. (Ha Ha). Seriously, how many do you know that spend the time that we do to ensure that we even have a future. My husband (Mr. Free Spender) says he couldn't have the patience that I do to even just do the paper work. I AM HIS BOOKKEEPER. Does that tell you anything?

I often wonder about what would happen if I would pass before him. I know that my Mom went through all of her money. She bought stuff for everyone. I tried to get her to live on her interest, but she never the responsibility and so much money at her disposal. I think that she was also setting herself up for people to be at her side.

Do you ever wonder what will happen to your spouse after you go? That is why you have to enjoy some things in life in case you do pass on. I could tell you a lot of stories.

I do all my husband's bookkeeping too and keep track of all finances. I am not worried that he will squander the money after I go, but that he won't know where half of it is.
I do agree that we need to spend some on fun! we have been on several cruises, eat dinner out and have dates a lot, and drive a fun car.

I wasn't insinuating that you weren't having fun. I read your posts and I can see that you enjoy yourself. You don't seem to be depriving yourself of things that you want. You are definitely an encouragement.

I, like you, wonder if my hubby could find everything. I'm definitely going to get him on board somehow. I'm going to make a list of all our insurances, bank accounts, etc. Lately, as I have opened up on-line banking accounts, I have involved him in signing on as a spouse. He is amazed at how much information and security questions there are.

We are simplifying eveything by having a 3x5 index card for each account and the various info on it including their 1-800 numbers.

That is a good idea. I do have things written down, but things change. Those index cards sound like the way to go!
