A check in the mail

My husband did a complete set of house plans, elevations, trusses, etc. for a friend's son.
He would usually charge about $2000 for a complete set (you would pay an architect about $12,000 or more) and he is actually better, because he sizes all the beams etc. He has been drawing house plans by hand for 35 years, but he does so very rarely. He just doesn't have the time. He just does his own houses.
But, this guy has been our plumber for over 20 years and dh gave him a break. He only charged him $250 plus $24 for the blueprints.
So, we got a check for $274 that we can add to our challenge money.

    Ima - what would happen if he stopped building and started drawing? How many house plans could he do a month?

    At least he could look forward to doing it at retirement age if his eyesight holds, right? Say, split the difference in what he's been charging and what an architect would charge....

    Is it something he enjoys doing??

    Oh yes, that is what he did for a living before we moved to the mountains. However, when we moved here, no one used house plans. There were no permits, no inspections, nothing!! so he learned how to build houses. Yes, he could always do that in retirement if he wanted.

    But now you guys are in the Internet age and with the right website design and a little promotion he could do his thing at home and still have a world-wide customer base!!

    I think it would be easier for him and would allow him to not work everyday like he's doing now. I can't believe artichects charge $12,000- wow.
