Grocery store rip off

January 8th, 2007 at 04:50 pm

I don't know if all grocery stores do this or not, but I notice it a lot at Ingles. There will be a "on sale" sign on a item, but when you check out, it scans at regular price.
I bought some sugar free pre packaged pudding for my husband's lunches as a treat. They were marked 2 for $4 or $2 each. When I got home, I noticed on my receipt the price was $2.88. I got ripped off for 88 cents. I think the store does this to hundreds of people a day. The last time I bought kleenex, it was the same thing, on sale, but scanned out at regular price.
I wonder how much the grocery stores make extra each day?/ (I know, I should take the receipt back and demand the money)
From now on, I am going to scan my own groceries so I can catch it right away.

This happens to me a lot, too. I *HATE* it, so I try to scan the receipt after I go through the check out but before leaving the store. I should probably complain to a manager, too.

I think Dateline NBC did a story on this awhile back. It's a pretty big problem all over the country. Since seeing that TV show, I always check my receipt before I leave the store.

I caught Trader Joe's doing this.

I wrote a complaint to CT attorney general becus i believed it was routinely done and was a deceptive practice. The atty general never responded to me, but they did forward my letter to Trader Joe's, who contacted me and asked me to come in and speak to the store manager. I did, but the guy was argumentative and not backing down, not very customer service skilled; when i was about to walk away from the guy in irritation, he ended up giving me some complimentary groceries and a bouquet of flowers.

Another thing they routinely do, is have a sale on milk, and put the sale sign right next to a brand that isn't on sale. One time, I noticed that the sale sign was right on the front of the door of the refrigerated door, but the sale brand of milk was only on the very bottom shelf. The are very aware that when you are in a hurry, you grab a gallon near your eye level, or within easy reach. You have to be SO careful, and aware of their sneaky practices.

I just blogged about this very thing not too long ago. It happens to me all of the time.

It isn't just milk, they put sale signs in front of the popular brand name item of a lot of things, but the actual item for sale is some off brand or store brand item. Or they put the sale sign in front of the 32 ounce bottles but its the 16 ounce bottle that is for sale. I always double check the sign against the item and the sale against the receipt for several years now. The stores are in it for themselves. Let the buyer beware.

Check the bottom of the receipt. Here most stores have the savings come off at the end and they total the savings you had.

This happens alot to me- and I take my recipt back and get the item for free- so 100% of my money back.
