rounding up

August 18th, 2006 at 02:05 pm

Our restaurant has changed their policy. Instead of going up front and paying the bill, you pay your server. Now you no longer get back your exact change. Instead, the server rounds up the bill. I was supposed to get $6.52 back in change last night, instead I got $6.50! I don't begrudge the server the 2 cents, but I had already left her a $6 tip on a $23 bill. Somehow, that doesn't seem right! I must be cheap!

Hmmm, even if it is a matter of pennies, there's something that just doesn't sound right about a restaurant that doesn't want to give back precisely what they owe you. Why don't you start 'rounding down' the bill too and see how that goes over? I bet if enough people complained, they'd stop doing it.

Indeed. It's a matter of principal. They're taking more money than you're suppose to pay.

I wouldn't be upset over 2 cents, but I would most definitely have a friendly chat with the manager as to why the policy change.

That is weird, I worked at lots of restaurants where I took the money, and I never rounded..oh wait I did, down! if I didn't want to give them the 2 cents I gave em a nickle! enough people left the nickle that I still made out...that way my pockets were not filled with pennies..and I still didn't cheat the customer..

That's silly! When I used to wait tables, we took the money from the customers and gave them their change, but we gave them the CORRECT change! I would definately talk to the manager---or else, I like the idea of rounding down the bill.
