Eating out

July 26th, 2006 at 02:11 pm

I never realized how much my husband likes going out at night to eat. I thought it was just me.
I mentioned that some of you on this forum were going to have a no spend week starting next week.
I asked him if he would be interested in that , and he said NO! Not if it meant he could not go out to eat at night.
He is not a spender. He only spends his money on gas for his van and the lawn mower. He takes his lunch and water every day, so he never goes to the fast food places.
He use to get coffee at mcDonald's, but he gave that up years ago.
So, what can i do? The man works 10 hours a day, seven days a week!
I guess he deserves his nights out if that is what makes him happy!

    Don't feel bad Ima.

I love to dine out too.

However, I'm not well-off like you guys.

So, I have to tone do my vices a bit until I do.

I do usually get the cheapest thing on the menu! Our meal last night was $16 and we have leftovers!

Your right your husband should be able to eat out when he wants. He works hard.I would look into getting a retraunt coupon book. see if it worthwhile for your area. Also I would call around & see if anyone has early bird specials. Some restraunts everything is cheaper at 6:00 pm but goes to regular price at 7:00pm. You can also check the coupon websites for restraunt coupons sometimes they publish coupons in larger papers so you may not get them.Ive also noticed on my recepits lately there are surveys & if you call & take them you get money off your next visit.

Bah! Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed. If dinner out is that important as a source of pleasure, I'd say go for it.

You are frugal and cost-conscious in every other aspect of your spending. Eating out neither obstructs you from meeting your financial goals nor creates a problem for anyone else.

I think we sometimes forget that frugality is a means to an end. It's not an end in itself. Dine out, Julie, and do it without a bit of guilt. You are an example and an inspiration to the rest of us.

Well thanks everybody. We live in a small town, no coupons! We can't go early even if they did have early bird specials cause my husband works until between 6-7pm. (He use to work til 9 pm.) We do get cheap things on the menu (chicken salad is dh's favorite) and bring our own drinks. It is just the whole date night, sit next to each other and sip a cool one type of thing!

I agree with you about hubbie working hard and deserving to eat out if he wants. With us, it is fishing. My DH works hard all week and does not spend any $ but on the weekend he wants to fish and he may probably spends $20 to help his buddy with gas for the boat and get a bite to eat. Sometimes he needs supplies like line or lures and he may spend a few bucks there but I do not argue with him as I feel he deserves it.

Yeah I agree with everyone, if your husband works hard and you can afford then go for it. I mean you save in everything else

It sounds like you are getting good value from the dinners, and they are but one controlled leak in your budget, so its a great idea!
