You have to be rich to be sick.

June 26th, 2006 at 07:43 pm

I just got all my bills from my colonoscopy; $919 for the hospital, $350 for the doctor and $500 for the guy that looks at the tissues. That is almost $1800. I don't have insurance, so i will pay it all. My husband is supposed to have one in two weeks, maybe we should cancel his for a while!!

I hear you! I've been saying for years now that being sick is almost a status symbol in ES!

Sorry about the bills! I just paid over $300 for medical stuff and I have insurance!

The price has about tripled over the past few years.

Are you aware that insurance companies routinely negotiate charges with Drs. and hospitals for care? Full cost care is reserved for cash paying patients. That's their bread and butter.

Go to their billing department and ask for a case coordinator (or whatever they are calling it this month). Tell them your concern and that you may be forced to postpone your husband's care, if at all, due to the "full price" charges. They may be able to cut you a break on the bill, afterall they are getting two cash paying customers.

I would also encourage you to do a cost analysis of other facilities in your area if available. Prices can and do range dramatically.
    Good Luck.
