saving gift bags

June 29th, 2014 at 08:43 pm

I realized a few years ago that no one uses wrapping paper anymore. Everyone uses gift bags.
Several christmas' ago, I stocked up on christmas gift bags while they were on sale at QVC. I use the same gift bags over and over at Christmas. (There is just the two of us, my husband and I)

Last week I bought a birthday present for my great granddaughter and went to buy a gift bag to put it in. The bag was $5! I couldn't believe it! I managed to find a gift bag at home.

While at the birthday party yesterday, I asked my granddaughter what she was going to do with all the gift bags she received. (presents for the baby)
She replied that she was going to throw them away! A $5 gift bag.!!!

I was shocked and she asked if I wanted them. I said, yes, of course, I do! I will never have to buy gift bags again.
I guess everyone thought I was cheap, but I am the only one with the paid for house and cars. (all 5 of them)

birthday party

June 26th, 2014 at 05:29 pm

I am invited to a birthday party this Saturday. My great granddaughter will be one year old! My, how time flies (or, how did I get this old). I had already mailed a card and a check for $50. Now I need to find a gift to bring. Any suggestions. Being s "saver grandma", I had already thought of a first bank for baby!

The braves won last night and I saved $20 with my advantage card, so I have $25 to add to the $20 challenge.

Prev. total $7388.00
today 25.00
new total $7413.00

Counting my change

June 20th, 2014 at 11:09 pm

I got my change jar and took it to the bank today. The total came to $49.95. DH was with me , so he gave me a nickle to make it an even $50 to add to the challenge.
We closed on the house today and put the proceeds into a new savings acoount that is paying 1% for 6 months. It is not much , but better than nothing.
We went to a land sale last week and this bank (our bank) was doing the financing for over 6% interest. How can they charge so much interest and pay out so little. Needless to say, we did not finance our land sales; we are paying cash.

Prev. total $7328.00
today 50.00
new total $7378.00

closing moved up

June 18th, 2014 at 12:54 am

Our house closing was moved up to this Friday. This is fine with us; we will just get our money sooner. The house is completely finished.
They wanted a dog door to be put in and they hired the guy who is going to screen the back porch. My dh got worried that he might "damage" the new house and my husband demands perfection. So, today, he spent part of the day moving wires behind the wall and putting in the dog door.

The stock market went up today and I had a no use gas day.

Prev. bal. $7316.00
today 3.00
new total $7319.00

Advantage card

June 17th, 2014 at 04:17 pm

We did our grocery shopping last night. I managed to save $11 using my advantage card which I will add to the $20 challenge. I use one of those riding carts for the first time, because I have been having knee pain for years.
It was kind of fun, and I only ran into one person. (barely)

$20 challenge-old balance $7305.00
today 11.00
new balance $7316.00

Sold the house!

June 15th, 2014 at 05:40 pm

We listed our house in late April. The first couple that looked at it made a low ball offer, which we refused. They have come back several times and made a new offer every time. They really want the house.

Finally, we excepted. I wish we knew how to sell the house ourselves and skip the commission. The real estate agents made far more money on the house than my husband did, even after working on it full time for a year. Don't get mad at me RE agents!! Our gal did not even have to advertise it once! My husband is known for his quality work, so he does everything himself.

Anyway, we have the closing at the end of this month. This is a spec house, hubby is a builder.

Friday the 13th

June 13th, 2014 at 10:20 pm

check up

June 8th, 2014 at 10:53 pm

I had my check up at the heart doctor's this week. So far, everything is ok. The only tow complaints that I have; my knees and shoulders hurt a lot, probably arthritis, and I just can't sleep at night.
The doctor did not want to give me anything to help out my problems, so I am probably going to ask my regular doctor. Medicare picks up part of this tab, so I don't know what my bill will be yet.

Ouch!

June 6th, 2014 at 02:01 am

Hubby went to the eye doctor yesterday, Eye exams, eye tests and a new pair of glasses cost us $833. I am glad Ihave a medical account for such expenses.
(P.S. I wear my old dollar store glasses (cost $5) and still passed the eye exam (for driver's license) without them.)
