I spent $2500 on propane

January 29th, 2011 at 09:16 pm

I just got my bill in the mail. I filled up my tank in late August. The bill was for $1100. I had to fill it again last week and this bill was for $1400.
I have spent $2500 on propane this winter. (I have a 1000 gallon tank.)

Gosh, I keep the house on 64 degrees and wear 2 sweaters all the time. It has just been such a cold long winter and we still have 50 days to go until the first day of spring.

I did buy steak on sale today, so I have $4 to add to the $20 challenge.

Prev. total $1199.00
today 4.00
new total $1203.00

Julie, can you imagine the propane bills of people in poorly insulated homes in your area if they do not try to save on heating? Wow! Hey, you don't have a leak or someone stealing your propane, do you?

Wow. I am not going to complain about my $400 power bill anymore. I am all electric so I don't have propane.

Nope no leak! My power bill is low, about $100 a month in winter.

Julie: Whew that is alot on propane! Do you use only propane or is propane your backup heat? We live in Delaware and used to have high propane costs also. We had a Trane heatpump with propane backup installed in 2009. I can't believe the drop in costs. We had propane delivered in March 2010 and didn't get it again until January 7th 2011. So for a whole year our propane only cost $1540. Our electric costs did not increase either. Of course, we replaced a 21 year old model with the new one - that could have made the difference. HVAC technnology has come along way over that period of time. Do you heat the whole house?

I have propane only, no back up. I do heat the whole house and it is big, 3300 sq. feet. We also heat our garage and it has a bath and eff. apt that is heated too.

Julie: So you are heating approx. 2-1/2 dwellings. I guess that's not so bad?????? Although, you may still be able to save with a heatpump primary if your electric rates are reasonable there. Is your efficiency apt. occupied? Have you thought about a separate unit for that space and/or only heating the garage when it is being used? I have learned so much about saving from you. I so admire your ability to save a little bit every day. It is difficult to save big chunks of cash, but I have learned from you that it is not so painful if you save in small bits. Thanks so much.
