Do you feed critters?

October 2nd, 2009 at 08:08 pm

Well, we do. I guess we could save a bunch of money if we didn't. Of course I have two dogs that eat very well. We have at least 3 or 4 bird feeders out in the back yard that we fill with sunflower seeds constantly. We also have a hummingbird feeder up except for winter time. (they even get bottled water)

Dh built a feeder for corn kernals to feed the deer every night. We always get the same 4 deer early; Ralphie, alice, trixie and Ralphie;s baby) We also feed at least one groundhog, Abraham, who likes corn too. Other deer come when it gets darker and there is never any corn left over. (squirrels like it too)

I did buy some baby back ribs and hamburger on sale today, so I will add the $7 I saved to put into my $20 challenge.
prev. total $13,953.00
today 7.00
new total $13,960.00

We go feed squirrels (nuts) and ducks and geese (bread crusts) in the park near our condo. My husband almost always has peanuts in his pocket in case he sees a squirrel; he loves them! I seem to remember my parents putting out a salt lick for deer at our vacation home when I was a kid; is that still something people do?

Yes, we know lots of people that put out salt licks.

No...just the five that live in my home. Two cats, two mice and a hamster! That's enough for now.

Hummingbird feeders here. And bread crumbs and such like get spread for birdies. Leftovers that are beyond the normal pale go out behind a barn for whatever stray cat, raccoon or critter decides to wander by and get adventurous with their diet. It always gets eaten.

And ImaSaver, I want you to please be careful to watch for bears okay?? ...since you are laying out a smorgasbord over there!! Big Grin

It just cost me eighty dollars for a critter getter to trap a squirrel that was in my basement. Same animal chewed the knobs of my washer and dryer, scattered packing material, and left remnants of himself all over the basement. I hate those animals, as in my area they are bolder than bold, you skirt them, they don't avoid you. I'm still cleaning up after the vermin.

Where I live, those are all pests - hehe.

Pigeons are our biggest pest. So I would do nothing to encourage them, for sure.

We get a lot of deer in the area (my friend and a co-worker live a little further out from the city and get a lot of deer, anyway). Since they have gardens, they sound like pests more than anything.

We also get a LOT of turkeys. Coyotes near my house. Bears? Thank goodness no. Big Grin YEs, be careful of bears.

Thankfully, the neighbor cat eats the mice and helps to keep the birds at bay.

P.S. I have a friend with a backyard oasis full of animals. She feeds them all. I think it's different when you have some REAL land!

I feed the hummingbirds, finches, and sparrows. Oh, and for some reason, the wild turkeys have been coming around again even though I do not feed them. I buy my bird seed at Walmart, where they have the lowest prices in our area.

I do feed kitty V.I. of course. But the rest? Nope. At least not by choice.

We're not encouraged to feed wild life here. It makes them less 'wild', they get dependant on humans and lose their instincts, not to mention they get friendlier and are less shy of humans - which in theory is nice, but there are a lot of not nice people out there.
i just feed our dog. he gets chuck steak, rice or pasta and carrots and beans Smile

I have a chubby persia white cat named Snowball who is a very picky eater. We also have outside cats. They eat dry cat food, but Snowball munches on both.
