House breaking!

June 17th, 2009 at 08:21 pm

I am trying to house break the puppy and it is really time consuming! I give her a treat when she goes outside, but she is still having so many accidents!
Anyone have any suggestions?

I have had two no use gasoline days this week. Gas here (premium) is now up to $2.80 a gallon, so it adds up. I will add $4 ($2 a day) to my challenge money.
Prev. total $10,142.00
today 4.00
new total $10,146.00

I can only tell you the story that my mom told me about house breaking the dog we had as a kid. The vet happened to be over, and he saw her squatting to go, he ran over and gently tossed her outside. She went outside from then on.

    Probably not much help...sorry.

get an adult dog. That's what I have always done for exactly your reason!

How old is she? How long have you had her? More specific information would be helpful. How often are you bringing her out? as standard...a puppy should only 'have' to hold their bladder for 1 hour per month of age. I know that's not always possible...but it helps you to understand what you can expect of them. Praising her and giving her a treat is GREAT. Also...use a command word when she is eliminating...very quickly you can bring her out and she will eliminate on command. You should take her out...after every meal, playtime, nap, drink, before you leave and AS SOON as you walk in the door, at least every hour when your home. When you leave and at night she should be in a crate that is small enough that she would have to lay in any 'accidents' she has. Dogs generally won't go where they have to sleep. It's very time consuming...but you will have a well adjusted puppy that in a few months won't have any accidents! You may already know this stuff but these are very good basics to follow. Also...never ever punish her for an accident. It will only make her sneaky about accidents...and you will be searching for where the 'smell' is coming from. Sorry so long!

Molly was 3 months old on the 15th. I have had her for 18 days. I do tell her to go potty when I take her out and I give her a treat (wet dog food) when she goes.
I was told to take her out every two hours, but she seems to go about every 30 minutes. But she is a cutie!
