Food pantry

September 21st, 2008 at 07:49 pm

We have a food pantry in this town and anyone can go in and ask for a helping hand. Lately, the pantry has been having articles in the paper about how empty they are. I guess they are getting a lot more people who are down on their luck in this bad ecomony.
I am buying 2 or 3 things for the pantry every time I go grocery shopping.
Here is what they are asking for:

canned potatoes
canned peas
chunky soups
bagged rice
instant potatoes
canned tuna and chicken
peanut butter
jelly
powdered milk

Maybe you could pick up a few items to donate to your food pantry too.

According to my Ingles card, I saved $3 today, so I will add that to my challenge money.
Prev. total $20,932.00
today 3.00
new total $20,935.00

Good for you, Ima! What a nice reminder too.

My youngest daughter's Girl Scout troup is doing a service project for our local food shelf by collecting food and donations, plus creating recipes using typically donated food items. Locally they say that donations always slow down in the summer, and don't pick up until nearer to Thanksgiving.

This is always something I could (and SHOULD!) do more about. I always donate to Stamp Out Hunger each year. I'm the ONLY one in my 48 unit condo that donates! Then there is also the option of donating closer to home. Recently I had a $10 GC in my wallet and I handed it to a friend on a whim. She started crying and said she was about to ask me for money because there was something on sale that week that she wanted to buy. She was trying to be frugal, but didn't have any money to even do that. She's older (late 60s) and forced into retirement for health reasons. She's never asked for money before.

Thanks Ima! I just wrote two goals for myself on a sticky note on my desk. One goal is to donate to the food pantry. Going to go look into this one RIGHT NOW. I can't stand the thought of people going hungry when I have fully stocked cupboards.

We donate to the local St. Vincent de Paul "soup" kitchen. They serve a meal every day to our very large homeless population.

You have reminded me to start looking for stuff for them again.
