I love this place!

August 12th, 2008 at 02:57 pm

Everyone here is so kind and supportive. I guess it is because we all have something in common. It is our interest in saving money for retirement someday.
I am on a couple of other forums. I get jumped on constantly, made fun of and ridiculed. Yesterday, someone used my user name (there are no rules on this forum) to say unkind things about a friend of mine. I was playing bridge at the time and did not know until 2 friends sent me an e mail to see if that was me.
It is very unpopular to talk about saving money. I was even accused of hating people who live in trailers and do not drive corvettes!
That is so far from the truth!! When I met my husband, he had a trailer. When my best friend moved to Knoxville, I encouraged her to buy a used trailer to build up some equity.

As for cars, what do I care what anybody drives. Most people have kids, corvettes do not work when you have kids! Drive what you want. I happened to marry a "car" guy. So what??

What do people find it so interesting to follow me from site to site? They even told people on the forum to follow me over here and read my "stupid" advice. Why would they want to do that? They have no interest in saving money or living a frugal, happy life!!

Bless you people! I never hear an unkind word on this forum.

I have $5 to add to my challenge money. the braves won 2 games in a row and I won three games of Mah jone.
Prev. total $19,697.00
today 5.00
new total $19,702.00

I used to be involved in a lot of forums but they all disintegrated into hate fests. & not that much was targeted at me specifically, but I found it despicable all the same.

Anyway, I think it is just something about the internet. Makes you more faceless and nameless, so many people feel completely comfortable being idiots I guess.

As such, I have found a very comfortable home here. But I really in general stay away from online communities. I can't say in the long run I have made many friends. & too much drama. I have gravitated away from online and back to the real world, with time.

Which is a shame. It is a neat medium. I guess a place like this gives me hope. I love this place too. Big Grin

We have kids and a Corvette - this happened yesterday. beautiful day in the Midwest. DH is asst. soccer coach and takes the 5 year old to practice from 6:00 to 7:00. I take the dancers to class from 7:00 to 8:00 and have other sleeping kids in the car. I cannot take the 5 yo with me because DH doesn't have enough room for the two dancers in the Vette. I cannot drive the Vette because it is stick-shift. What do we as parents do? Waste gas, drive home, have DH turn around and go back in the other gas guzzler minivan for the dancers while I went home and move the sleepers to their beds.

So much for Vette! They are neat though on a date night. And I agree, I like this Forum a lot. Hang out here rather than in the other one. Well, use your name, too. Like "I'm a glad I'm friends with Ima!"

I too have gradually stopped going to any of my other online communities because people were so quick to get in my face and go off on me, in ways you would never do to a person face to face. We supposedly had the same lifestyle in some ways but they were always looking for ways to disagree with me.

I know I have a way different outlook than lots of people on Saving Advice, politically, religiously and in many other ways. We even save and spend money differently. Yet everyone stays supportive and civil and we don't break off into factions or insult each other. I've never come across an online community quite like it.

    Thank goodness for you guys!

We appreciate you here, Ima! And, unless you have some pals on the other forums, I would consider walking away from them. What is crazy is that grown men and women can act that way. I guess some have esteem issues and resent people easily. Instead of plucking ideas from your brain, they see arrogance where there isn't any. What is unclear is how they can't figure out what a sweetie you are!

Ima, you have no idea how much I enjoy reading your blogs... You are an inspiration to me. Yes, we live in a trailer, and no, we don't drive a corvette. But you are teaching me so much about money. I haven't traveled to other financial blogs. You all are too good to leave!

    This place loves you, too!

As for your advice being "stupid", well, if it irks them THAT much, they certainly aren't saving!

Do they not realize that blaming someone else for having what they don't have doesn't actually get them any closer to having the life they want?

Perhaps some are so jealous of your life that they fail to realize how hard you and your husband have worked to get to that point in the first place.

Frankly, we can all turn our financial life around. We can all work on having a better life. But it can't happen if people won't stop blaming others and start taking action for themselves.

Ima, you forgot to mention that we (your true friends) started a new forum just for us and it is private. We wont let any of those others from the other forums come into this new place and attack anybody. We've all been attacked and it's not a nice thing to read. Stay away from those other two places and stay here and the private one. You have friends who love you in both places so there is absolutely no need to go to the other three. Trust me on this and please take my advice.

I wish I knew who was saying those bad things about you. They were really saying bad things "from" you. I didn't even hear or see it. If someone has a comment on their post about IMA and it isn't from her, delete it!

I joined this group because I felt it was supportive and friendly. Even though I am not "saving money for retirement someday" (since I'm 5 days from retirement), I still feel connected by a common interest in finding frugal alternatives, maintaining/improving my financial resources, and continuing to find creative ways to save in order to enjoy retirement more (e.g., by traveling).

Ima, as the #1 poster, you are like the "matriarch" of this blog family and a good example to those just starting to get their finances in order. You are always sweet and welcoming to newcomers, and your posts are fun to read... I wouldn't bother with those other forums. Like my DD2 would say, "Mean people suck!"

When you have attained the kind of financial security you have, through years of hard work and consistent saving, you are entitled to have 25 Corvettes if it makes you happy. You are not hurting anyone, it's YOUR money, and since you can't take it with you, you should enjoy it.

Now, about people who drive Corvettes but can barely pay their bills and have no savings...

This is a great forum. I have never been to another site because I feel that all my needs are met with this site.

I agree that this place is warm and people always have an encouraging word to say. I sometimes frequent a running forum and the people there are very friendly too. Forums like that are few and far between IMHO. People get snotty and make rude comments far too often. I'm glad I discovered this website and even tho I was away for awhile, I was warmly welcomed back.

I cannot believe people attack you??? What are they thinking??? That's just crazy. You're so nice and lovely, IMA.

I feel pretty disgusted when people are just plain rude and damn, and make an argument for nothing. Geee. Get a life!

We're very fortunate that we have wonderful group of people here, and I really like it this way.

Phooey on them!!! They are not friends! Even though I haven't joined (yet), Ilove this place too.
    Keep your chin up Ima.

Yes, Ima's friend, I did not mention that someone has started a brand new forum in our little city and so far, it is by invitation only. So, all the nice people have been invited and we get along just great.
We have parties, cook outs, lunches and even did a benefit yard sale. I am sure we will all be friends for many years to come.
I wish some of these 30 year olds attacking me would realize that I had some pretty lean years when I was young too.

Work hard and pay yourself first!!

Julie, life is too short to deal with people like that. I used to be active on another forum and I learned through another forum member that there was an "underground" forum where other posters complained and insulted others, including me. As much as I enjoyed participating in that forum, after I learned that and read that "underground" board and comments made about me, I just stopped posting there. It wasn't worth it any more.

I'm much happier, and hopefully more appreciated, here at savingadvice. You are too, Julie.

  17. Camie Says:

I too enjoy this site. I've been away for a while, and in that period of time, I have gravitated away from my savings habits. I now have credit card debt, and run out of budgeted money before I'm paid again.

I appreciate and learn from you, Ima. So don't worry about others who criticize. I get criticized a lot as well, mostly from people whose financial situations aren't as stable as mine. Usually the criticism revolves around spending more money on "up to date" fashions, shoes, "stylish" haircuts, and the list goes on and on.

julie, i've been on this site for about a year and a half and i too find that it is such a great little online community. we all have different views and for the most part people keep it civil. your posts are always enjoyable to read, and i think a great deal of people look up to you and learn from you. i wouldn't worry about those other people, they're idiots and deserve to wallow in their hate-fests on the other forums. Big Grin

I am so fortunate to have found this website! And Ima, those people are just poopy-heads! You rock!! Smile

    You rock !!!! :-)

I love you, too- your my fav poster on here!!! I've had people get on here and ridicule me- and they never left a real email address, and they weren't on this forum. I'm not talking about when my publicist was doing my blog- folks had amp reason to be upset- she was posting stuff about me that was icky and glamoured-up. Unfortunately, its people from my hometown, too, that flame me- they are just jealous because I clear so much money a month, and get to travel- that is what I think. Ignore them! They aren't worth your time.

    Hi Ima,

I just came across this posting. I too am a follow savingadvice colleague and friend. I absolutely love your blog, too. First of all, you are youthful, refreshing, and I love to read about your experiences. What I love about you, you enjoy your life while saving money, and working towards your goals.

Do not be discouraged or offended by "haters." They are envious and jealous. They are mad, because they desire your life. Keep on being the "Queen" of the finance blog.

I love your writing, realness and blog. You go girl!!!

    Sharman

Haven't those haters learned that envy is the most expensive emotion? If you envy someone for what they have, you spend. The bloggers here really get it. You and everyone here spend money and save money. If you save some money, and do it your way, you win. And if you write about your ways on your blog, you and other readers learn from it.
    Keep your chin up!

Well, Julie, I don't know anything about that other online forum, but I think all of us here like you and are inspired by your ability to stow away cash so easily. I watch your blogs because I am interested in how you do it. It's only August and you have nearly met $20,000 for your challenge. Wow. You are just great.
