How much did I save??

August 6th, 2008 at 04:40 pm

We decided to eat at home last night and save money.
I bought hamburger on sale for $3, polish sausage on sale for $3, buns for $1, potatoes and onion for $2. Then i bought an apple pie with a dollar off coupon for $4. We used about $2 worth of charcoal.
Plus, we had to run the oven for a hour for the potatoes and another hour for the pie.
Then dh had to fix up the lettuce, tomato, onion, meat, etc. Afterward we had to clean up and run the dish washer. Total cost with counting the things we already had on hand, $15.
We eat out at our usual place and get our usual meal for $16!! And someone else does all the cooking and cleaning!

hmmmm?????

Did you have leftovers? That could count as a savings for extra lunches, etc..?

I think you would have spent less since the pie would not have been eaten in one night. I buy ground chuck or ground sirloin on sale and measure and shape it into 4 oz (1/4 lb) patties amd freeze it. I normally only eat one hamburger if I have other items to eat. I'm sure you had buns left over, sausage left over, etc.

You made it yourself, knowing the ingredients that went in were properly cooked and cleaned. There is no substitute for quality time spent together, even if you are just cooking.

Is your usual meal out is for 16 dollars together or each? If I remember right, I think because you and your husband are regulars, you both can bring your own drinks which are probably not okay for everyone else. This helps.

When I was single, it was cheaper for me to eat out cheaply and I walked everywhere.

Now that my husband and I live out in the summit, any resturants will be 45 minutes away and the gas alone will make eating out more expensive. I also go grocery shopping every 3-4 weeks to make it simpler and save time as well. It depends on your lifestyle and living situation.

I was just going to add in gasoline expenses to & from restaraunt each evening. But sounds like for just two, you came in right around even, except as boo & Aleta aluded as to the leftovers. Except for whatever you'd give for tips.

Since you guys are in a nice place financially I'd go on eating out if it were me!

I forgot to add the gasoline and tips when you go out. I just find anymore that having no spend days and no gas days help me out not to spend. Sometimes if I think about it; I know I have something in my refrigerator or freezer that I can make.

It is so easy to buy out that most people don't think twice about it.

You should have lots of leftovers to eat for lunches, and that should save even more money. Does the sixteen dollars include a tip? Sometimes it is just nice to stay home, and make a meal together.

The $16 is meals for both of us and we only live 4 miles from the restaurant!
