Charging my meals

July 21st, 2008 at 04:36 pm

We eat dinner out a lot, almost every night. I have decided to try charging my meals. I noticed that my chase rewards card give me back 3% for home improvements, so we use it a lot at Home Depot. But, it also pays 3% for dining out. Now, I have always hated to charge meals out and have never done it. But I like the idea of the 3% back.
So, I am going to try it for a while and see how it works. I am bringing the bill home with me and putting the cash that I would have paid in an envelope. I will see how this works out.

I really like the idea of putting what you spent in an envelope in cash. Even if you keep track of it on a budget sheet, it doesn't mean that you physically set it aside. If you get sidetracked on things, you might not realize it until the bill comes. I'm going to set up a separate sheet to record credit card charges so I can set aside the money right away. Even virtually in a separate checking or savings account or something. I can transfer between accounts and make sure I have it on hand. Thanks for the idea!

I use my cards for EVERYTHING for rewards.

Funny thing is I get plenty of weird looks and probably plenty of assumptions that I am broke. I'll charge $1 at this point.

We went to the zoo and the guy told us "I haven't got to try the credit card machine since it was fixed a few days ago." I was rather surprised. It was like a $8 charge. But it all adds up.

    Your plan sounds good.

I'm with monkey mama. We do the same thing. And our mileage card gives us more miles at certain restaurants.

I use my credit card for everything to get the points. A friend and I are going to Red Lobster for free from the points. I usually use the points for treats.

When that friend and I go places together, she always pays cash. I throw her part on my card and she gives me her cash. She helped earn the points too. I figured she should get to benefit from them too. Besides, she is the only person that will go to Red Lobster with me.

I have already gotten $450 back this year in checks and I just ordered another $50 check from the chase rewards card.
