Starting to read the meter

June 5th, 2008 at 02:26 pm

Well, I am starting to read the electric meter and write it down every day. I think it helps me to be more aware of how much electricity I am using. Mainly, the air conditioner. However, I do appreciate that it does not cost nearly as much to cool the house now, as it does to heat the house. It use to be exactly the opposite.
I hope I can stay under my budget amount of $160 a month.

I did the same thing last summer. Until it dawned on me that central air cools the entire house needlessly... as its only resident, I occupy one or two rooms most of the time. So I turned off the a/c and switched to using a fan in the bedroom (they have those super efficient, super cool fans now for less than $40). It even comes with a timer, so I can set it to 4 hours at bedtime, and automatically shuts off in the middle of the night when it's cooler anyway!

We have a two story and it gets incredibly hot up in the kids rooms during the summer. I just keep the air as usually (comfortable downstairs) and we keep 2 fans going upstairs for them when they are playing or sleeping. They usually sleep in the middle room (play room)in the summers--they pretend they are camping out and they can have both fans pointed at them. I should start checking the meter too.

It is much hotter upstairs here, especially in the room that I spend a lot of time. (computer and treadmill.) So, I do run the air more upstairs than downstairs. We have two units.
