This bank doesn't want me!!

April 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

We have 4 local banks in town, I try to have an account in all of them, but there is one that has given me a hard time.
I tried to open a c.d. for $100,000 last year. I went on a saturday and the customer rep. was busy. Finally, she waited on the lady ahead of me who was there to stop payment on a check. I waited for a while and then left. I opened a c.d. at another bank.
Yesterday, I decided to try again. I have a c.d. coming due and there are NO good local rates.
This bank has a checking account that pays 4% but you have to do a lot of little things to earn that rate. (online bill paying, direct deposit, debits) All things that I have never done.

So, I tried again. This bank needs to hire more customer reps. This time the lady was on the phone and after about 20 minutes, I walked out again.
I have a jumbo c.d. coming due the end of the month and no one seems to want my money!

Have you tried Capital One? They are quoting a rate of 4.5% on their website.

Ask for the Manager! If she's busy tell them you will be phoning the head office and so on. Just Google the bank name and get the phone numbers.

That's what sent me to the credit union across the street from the bank. I was told once too often "It'll only be a minute." After the 4th or 5th time of "It'll only be a minute" Angry Smiley 054 I asked the rep "How long is YOUR minute, because MY minute is exactly 60 seconds?"
And after 60 seconds,I left, went across the street and never looked back. Now,I get mail solicitations all the time from that bank. Ha! Thanks, but no thanks.

Perhaps rather than arriving cold as a walk-in you could call ahead for an appointment. It might not hurt to mention the amount you have to put into a C.D..

A bank that doesn't want to service you doesn't deserve your business.

Incidentally, if you feel it's worth it, I would complain to the bank manager or president there.

I agree with Broken Arrow. Several weeks ago, I had bad customer service from a bank employee. I called the bank's 800 number and got the name of the bank manager and wrote her a letter. She actually called me and we talked on the phone for 20 minutes about the problem. She told me if I ever have any problems to be sure and give her a call. So not all banks are bad, but sometimes their employees are.

You also have to find out about the health of the bank before you invest your money there. Some banks who have the subprime issues are banks that are offering higher rates today.

Because of the FDIC insurance, I wouldn't invest $100,000. in one account. I might put in $90,000 or $95,000. Your 100,000 is going to earn interest which will be more than the 100,000 you started with.

You can get more FDIC coverage, depending on the type of account, and any qualified beneficiaries you add to it. FDIC.gov has great info! Big Grin
