Does anyone save aluminum cans?

March 12th, 2008 at 01:42 pm

Does anyone save aluminum cans and sell them. I do not because there is no place around here to sell them. However, I overheard a man at Sears last night, talking about selling them for $1 a pound. Can that be true??

Here in Iowa we have a 5 cent bottle deposit, so I save them to return and get my deposit back. No profiting here!

Yes, we save them. I think here in Ohio they are around $.85 per pound. I was thinking that it took around 22 cans to make a pound, not sure though.

In my city, if you crush them yourself, they sell for $.65 per pound. Uncrushed, they pay you $.60 per pound. Maybe since there is no where close to you, they pay more at the site that they do take them.

DH and I don't drink soft drinks or beer in cans, but my son is addicted to cola drinks, and has lots of cans. He saves them for me, and I recycle them and use the money to purchase savings bonds for my grandsons, his nephews. They receive a gift card with the bonds, stating they are from their uncle.

Michigan has a $.10 deposit on most cans/bottles. So I only need 10 cans to make a $1.

And considering how lightweight alumnium is, I think it would take more than you realize to come anywhere near a pound.

$1/lb is a really good deal. I try to avoid bulk recycling centers and generally to go the machines where you feed the item one at a time, where you get $0.05 per can. I don't do it for the earth or to try to maximize my income, but rather to avoid waste. All I know that the stores collection the redemption deposit, so someone has to get it back.

yah, it dont take much. my girls go for walks out here in the country with bags and we have friends who save the cans for us and they made enough last year with their cans to pay for tickets to holdiay world for all of us for a day. so its a pretty good thing. we just save them and keep what friends give us. it adds up pretty quick.

We save the can tabs for the Ronald McDonald house, but the rest we just recycle. We used to get money for them, but we cleaned them and crushed them and it was a lot of work. Maybe they are worth more now.

.05 a can here. When you buy a 12 pack..it is .60 deposit...and you have to return the cans to get your .60 back. When i was off work, I returned them and used the money for my challenge account. Before and after my stint at home, we save them up all year and the hub and DD3 cash them in to pay for their dunes trip each year at Thanksgiving.

I live in Ohio, and I was wondering where I can find organizations that pay for aluminum cans?
