The best ways to lower your electric bill.

January 17th, 2008 at 09:19 pm

The best ways to lower your electric bill is to read your meter daily.
Write it down and keep track of how many kilowatts you use each day.
Walk thru the house and turn everything off. Get in the habit of having nothing running unless you are in the room.
No tv, lights, etc., on in an extra room.
If the plug feels warm, it is using power.
My best advice is with your electric hot water heater. Turn it off at the fuse box. Only turn it on about 20 minutes before you need it for a shower or to run the dish washer!!

Take what you save on your electric bill and add it to your $20 challenge each month. That is what I do!!

I've just learned to turn off the water cooler at night and turn it back on in the morning. I'm getting there!

Ima, you have saved me so much money. I've heard you talk about this hot water thing for about a year now. Once my old roommate left (she didn't want to bother with planning for a shower) I started turning it way down until I needed it. My gas bill to heat my hot water was $51 in May (um, yeah, the furnace isn't on in May, so this was all for hot water I wasn't using) and when I started shutting my hot water heater off until I need it, it was $14.85 in November. Thank you!

All great ideas. Thank you. I live in an apartment building and I don't have access to were the meters are located .

I'm with Jan. Turning it off at night is the best way and there's still hot water in the morning so I only turn it on when I really need the hot water.

I love the fact you pointed out if the plug is warm, it is getting power. Thats the same thing our high school shop teacher used to say.
