My bank has messed up.

February 27th, 2007 at 04:56 pm

Since I have learned how to check on my accounts on the computer, I do this almost every day. That way, I can keep track of what checks have cleared, because I write a lot of business checks.
When I checked today, my business checking had gone down about 19K since yesterday.
What was missing was the almost 19K that I had deposited on Saturday to pay a big drywall and insulating bill.
The bank said they are having some problems and to check back this afternoon. Gosh, I hope nothing bounces in the meantime.
The deposit showed up yesterday when I checked, but has disappeared today. I don't really understand why?

Banks are funny. Mine, Wells Fargo, shows deposits as pending and they usually clear and show as posted the next day. When my brother used Bank of America his boss (in another state) would deposit his check on payday and it would show up as a pending deposit so he'd pay bills and then things would start bouncing because too much time had elapsed between when the deposit was made at an out of state branch and when the actual money reached the state he lived in. Very confusing stuff.

They should take off any overdraft charges that occur.

Banks are using this as a way of making more money off customers. They purposely fluctuate deposit dates and times, to time it just right so they can bounce checks. I once made a deposit of $7K to Wells Fargo, and instead of clearing at least a part of the funds, they bounced several checks of $20 and under (like Starbucks, etc.). The deposit was from my employer, and there was no reason for a 10 day hold - usually it would hold for 5-7 business day. But on this particular check, the bank, for some reason, held it for an extra 3 days so they could bounce some checks and make some free $ off me.
