Debt proof Living

January 12th, 2007 at 03:15 pm

I have subscribed to this newsletter since it first came out, about 10 years ago. It was called Cheapskate Monthly but changed the name about a year ago. Mary Hunt sugeests that you live on the 10=10=80 formula. You give 10%, save 10% and use the other 80% to live on. she suggests saving the 10% even when you have debts to pay on, because everyone needs to have an emergeny fund.
Does anyone else read this newsletter?

I've read her book Debt Proof Living, and some on the website in the past, but haven't ever gotten the newsletter.

I like her style - it's reasonable and doable and understandable. Those things make it a go in my book!

I haven't read her book yet but intend to. It's on my list. My goal this year is to read a book a month if I can. Yesterday, I picked up Your Money or Your Life by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin. Probably a good book to start the year off with. I've noticed that they all have different %'s Some want you to take it off the gross and some after taxes. So, I guess it should be somewhere in the middle.

I visit her website often, but I don't subscribe. I won't pay for a "frugal" or "budgeting" type of newsletter because the internet is full of all that information for free.
I've also read most of her books(library has them).

I forgot to say that I picked up Your Money or Your Life at the library. I request them online and pick the books up at a small library less than 2 miles from my home. Besides, you don't know if you would want to own the book unless you read it and maybe then you can buy it used afterwards. Last year I looked at what we pay in property tax for the library on two houses and I told myself that I was going to start getting my tax money out of what we were paying. Check your bills and you'll be surprised.

I've never read it, but the percentage appears to reflect the adage we all know and love, "Live below your means".

I'm not sure I'd like to follow anyone's percentages myself though. I just rather be saving a lot more than 10%, whenever I can. I do as much as I can, but I don't know what that percentage is.

I've looked in on her website - some of her newspaper columns are archived there. I could do a bit without her politics, which I don't share, but that's easily ignored - 99.999% percent of her saving info is solid, except for that weird bit about watermelon being a vegetable. Big Grin
