Possum Drop

December 31st, 2006 at 10:51 pm

Have you ever heard of a possum drop? They are having one near here tonight and have been doing it at least 22 years. (as long as I have been here)
They get a live possum, put it in a cage and lower it at midnight. They do it at a little old gas station and hundreds of people turn out to watch.
I am not making this up folks. This happends in Brasstown, N.C., right over the gerogia line! Someday I will have to go and see it for myself!

I haven't heard of that but it doesn't surprise me at all. Not too far from here we have an annual Possum Festival and the Yamboree (celebrating the lowly sweet potato, of course!) and the syrup festival, and gusher days (celebrating the oil boom), yada, yada... A possum drop sounds like fun to me!

We have a sorgum syrup festival each October. Oh, and the possum is released and not hurt.

How cool is this? Fun city! Will have to put it on my list of things to do before I die. May have to start one here in my own corner of redneck world! Smile

Just yesterday morning a possum tried to race the car as we left in the wee morning hours to take CashHappySon to work. Waddle, waddle, waddle it went then finally it made it to the ditch. I totally won Possum!! -- Eat My Dust!!.

One of the funniest memories I have is watching The Hubster (cityboy)poke a broom at a possum that was climbing the gate trying to get in our top yard right next to the backdoor. Poor little possum was hissing like mad and Hubster was trying to act all cool about it but he was freaked! Hilarious!!

When my kids were little they came running out of a room in granny's house saying there were two huge rats in the room under their bunk beds...turns out it was two rather smallish baby possums up under there!

    Whooooo - close encounters! hahahaaaaaaaaaaa!!

I was sitting in my living room about a year ago with both of my cats when I heard something eating in the kitchen. I freaked but eventually got up to go look. There was a possum eating the cat food. It had gotten into the house through the cat door which is now permanently closed.

    A possum drop?! Big Grin

Wow, no, I've never heard of it, but I guess I'm not surprised either. But then, I never did celebrate New Years with my in-laws so....

    Absolutely hilarious!

Haven't heard of a possum drop, but in my town we now have the "GIant Peep" drop, since Peeps candies are made locally.

Wasn't there a big hooha about the possum drop a few years ago, PETA suing to get it stopped? Which okay, if they were dropping the possum without a cage I could see, but it was well cared for and seemed a harmless pastime.

Oh Ima/Julie - I forgot to tell you last night - there is a guy one town over from us who has a pet possum that he walks on a leash. I like to broke my rubber-necking self and crashed the car when I drove by him one day. I've seen him out many times since walking the little pet!! FUNNY!!
