Want to buy an electric car?

August 31st, 2006 at 03:14 pm

I got a catalog in the mail yesterday, from Hammacher Schlemmer. On the cover is 120mph electric car. You can drive it 40-80 miles on one charge. (Is it 40 or is it 80, big difference??)
It is pretty ugly and only 39 inches wide, the passenger sits behind you.
Are you ready to order this? Think of all the gas you can save!!
The price tag?? $108,000!! Seriously!!

At $20-30 a week for my gas consumption, it is going to take me a while to justify the cost of this car. Think I will keep the vette!

wow...I think not... the cost is just prohibitive.

I will just stick to my current economy car for now...and drive as little as possible!!!

My guess is not that many. They're currently hand-made and that's why it's so expensive. Even if they find venture capital and enter production, most of the price will still be tied up in the expensive batteries. Even then, there's a question in terms of creature comfort and perceived "safety" in a crash. 40-80 miles is also rather limited in range. Last but not least, even the batteries will need to be replaced within a span of 5 to 10 year.

It's a bit ironic that I should say all this because I'm actually a big fan of wanting an alternative to the current fossil fuel cars. However, to me, this is a practical endeavor, and therefore, alternative vehicles must somehow become more practical become it can gain traction.

Kind of a long-winded way of saying, "Bummer!" Big Grin
