So happy to be here!!

July 23rd, 2006 at 04:06 pm

I am so happy to be on this forum! On my local forum, if I say anything about saving or being frugal, I get jumped on! Here I can talk about money.
I did 60 minutes on my treadmill yesterday, that earned $2 plus I ran to the store this morning for a few things for dinner tonight. I saved $3 using coupons, so I have a total of $5 to add to my challenge money.
Prev. total $9868.00
today 5.00
new total $9873.00

You get jumped on?! Wow. I can only image that you're making people feel defensive, since they know they should be spending less themselves, but don't.

Yes, no one will discuss ways of saving money and they say they are sick of me dicussing things that are frugal. However, i suspect they are living paycheck to paycheck.

Well, we're glad you're here as well. I always get a kick out of your postings, and you are always on topic here in a savings-themed forum. Maybe your local forum has a different focus?

They can talk about anything they want to. We are just mostly from the same town. There is a big difference between the locals born here and the people that have moved in.(even tho I have been here for 22 years.)

Then you can talk about anything you want to. Smile
It is frustrating what people have no interest in the things we find so important. I get that from some of my younger friends. They want to talk about the great deal on BMW convertible they've found, and I want to talk about the joy of driving a paid-off car.

They think I'm a kill-joy, and I think they're imprudent. Of course I have money in the bank, while my friends are strung out on credit card debt. They think the good times won't end, so they live on the edge. Didn't Will Rogers say that America would be the first country to drive to the poorhouse by car?

It's so important to have social support for one's goals & ways of doing things. Being frugal these days almost seems "anti-American"--remember the cals to "be patriotic and spend" after 9/11?

One thing that is invaluable to me is a local simple living group. We've been meeting monthly for 6 years, sometimes out of the Friends (Quaker) meeting house and sometimes in people's homes. The group started out of a group at the Quaker meeting who did the "Your Money or Your Life" program 6 years ago and then wanted to continue meeting; it expands mostly by word of mouth from members who have like-minded friends, with the occasional external boost...e.g, a couple of years ago a local magazine did an article with a mention. Having a group of "fellow travelors" both gives me role models (since some of the people in the group are much better at living with less than I am, and a source of support and exchange of ideas, help, etc.
