Guilty or Not Guilty?

April 3rd, 2015 at 07:23 pm

I watched th Lizzie Bordon movie last night. I also watched the one starring Elizabeth Montgomery in 1975. (Plus I read the book)
What is your opinion? Was Lizzie guilty or not guilty or murdering her father and step mother?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

March 17th, 2015 at 04:24 pm

Are you wearing something green today?? I have been out sick for a few days, so I have missed a lot of entries on here. I am not sure what I had, but I did make a trip to the emergency room because I felt so badly.
The new house got started yesterday (septic tank and ground breaking) so hopefully, I can get back on track to saving.
Congratulations to Lucky Robin, Banker Gurl and birthday girl, Thriftorama!

sign on a church

March 3rd, 2015 at 05:10 pm

We took a ride yesterday just to get out of the house. On the way, we passed a church with a sign that read:
If you are praying for snow, please stop!!

I agree.

Elvis day

February 16th, 2015 at 03:45 pm

Yesterday was my Elvis day and I did not forget. I attended his concert on Feb. 15h, 1977 with my two best friends. We got front row seats. It was a wonderful concert. Elvis died just a few months later. (August 1977. I still have my ticket stub and the poster I bought that day. (I even have the jumpsuit I wore to the concert.)

Inexpensive valentine,s dinner

February 15th, 2015 at 08:44 pm

WE ent out with friends for dinner last night to one of their favorite mexican restaurants. I was not very hungry, so I just got a side order of rice, hubby got a shrimp dinner. Our total bill came to $9.25. (we are allowed to brown bag it, so we took wine.) Gosh, can't beat that for a night out!

Happy Valentine's day

sick puppy

February 12th, 2015 at 02:42 pm

My little girl, Molly has been sick. We took her to the vet about 3 months ago with neck and shoulder problems. She got an adjustment, but on Monday, she was acting like she was in pain.
We took her to the vets again and they took x rays. The vet said she would need surgery to fix the problem.
She needed to go to a specialist to get evaluated. On Tuesday,we took a trip to a town near Atlanta to the special vet there. They are going to try medication and confinement for 3-4 weeks, to see if surgery can be avoided.
The two vet visits were $460 and the surgery will run about $5000.
There is no question that we WILL spend the money on the surgery. Molly will be 6 next month and is such a joy to us. We will spend whatever it takes to make her well.
(Molly is a malta-poo. Her mother was a pure bred black poodle and her father was a pure bred maltese. She looks like her daddy and is the sweetest dog in the world.)

50 years

February 12th, 2015 at 02:34 pm

50 years ago today I was married. There are not many on this board that can say they have been married for 50 years.
However, I have to fess up. I was married twice. The first time was for 12 years. While going thru my divorce, I met my dh. (a blind date) It was love at first sight and we were married just 5 weeks later. I don't reccommend that to everyone, but it has sure worked out! He is a wonderful husband!
We have been married for 38 years. (12 the first time.) (12 and 38 make 50)

Hubby is home

February 9th, 2015 at 07:47 pm

He got home on Sat. night. I was so glad to see him. I hope he does not have to go away again for a long time.
He is kind of frustrated because he feels like he just wasted his time (and money) At least he got a water purifier and put it on for his parents, so they don't have to buy bottled water any more.
We will just keep our fingers crossed that the parents will get by ok for a while.

Horray for Lacey!!!!!!

January 14th, 2015 at 09:20 pm

Last week, a young man from this are went on a short hike on the applachian trail. (which runs thru out county) When he did not get back by dark, emergency personel was called. His car was in the parking lot of the trailhead.
An 18 month old bloodhound named Lacey and her trainer were called out to help. They got the young man's car unlocked and Lacey got a good whiff on his shoes. There were 3 trailheads to chose from, and Lacey headed down the middle one. The weather was in the 20's with a 15 mph wind blowing. Everyone was very worried because the young man had on only a light jacket and a pair of shorts.
Within an hour, Lacey found the young man (and his dog). His body temperature had already dropped dangerously low, but thanks to Lacey, they will both be ok. I hope the young man realized how lucky he was.
Thank you Lacey, you are a great dog! We are all very proud of you!!

GE capital bank

January 9th, 2015 at 10:06 pm

I opened up a new account at GE capital bank this week. They are paying 1.05% on savings accounts.

My local bank is paying me 1.25% on a money market, but that rate will end on Feb. 20th and I do not see anything even close here locally.
I also opened a Mysaving direct account at Emigrant Bank online. They also are payaing 1.05%.
I guess I will transfer some money into both of the new accounts when my local account matures. I have to keep quite a bit of cash on hand to fund the new houses we are building. I sure wish rates would go up!!

The Best day of your life!

January 2nd, 2015 at 09:22 pm

A good question to start off 2015. What was the best day of your life? Why??

Mine was May 13th, 1977.
That is the day I got married to my wonderful husband. We had a small wedding at my house and then on a cruise for our honeymoon. I even learned how to eat left handed so we could hold hands while we ate our meals. We are still holding hands.

Anyone have new year's eve plans?

December 31st, 2014 at 05:15 pm

Looks like we will be just staying home this year! I hope you all have fun and drive safely!

"Acquiring a dog"

December 27th, 2014 at 08:58 pm

I have a framed picture in y breakfast room. It is a picture of a couple of cute dogs and the caption reads:

Acquiring a dog
may be the only opportunity
a human ever has
to chose a relative.

I guess I have been pretty luck so far. I was born, younges child in the family, youngest grandchild, youngest niece, etc. At an early age, I lost my father and all 4 of my grandparents. Later, I lost my mother, all my aunts and uncles, my sister and all my cousins!

I have had several chances to acquire a wonderful, furry (dog) relative; my nicky, dixie, dusty, nicky II,lucy and my little holly.
Now, I have my beautiful, sweet Molly and my bossy little Abbey. What a wonderful family I have to start the new year with!! (My SA family too)

The orphans dinner

December 24th, 2014 at 04:27 pm

My girlfriend is hosting christmas eve dinner tonight. She is calling it "the orphans dinner"
There will be a total of 8 of us and all of us have lost our parents. (except my husband)
We also have no other family. The others have no children and my only daughter died in 2013.
So, I think it is very nice of her and her husband to have all of us together on Christmas eve.
She is serving prime rib and is worried about how it will turn out!
I don't care if we were just having soup, it will be nice to be all together. I am so lucky to have my wonderful husband!!!!
Merry Christmas!!

Molly is feeling better

December 11th, 2014 at 06:15 pm

Molly, my little malti-poo has not been acting herself lately. We took her to the vet and the vet determined that her neck was out of joint. She corrected the problem and now Molly is acting more like her old self. We are so happy to have her feeling good again. It is like a wonderful Christmas present to us! We can't stand it when our little girls, Molly and Abbey, are not feeling well.

Pearl Harbor day

December 7th, 2014 at 03:12 pm

Today is Pearl Harbor Day. There are not too many people alive who remember that day! (Myself included)

Thought for the day

December 4th, 2014 at 08:03 pm

It is nice to be important,

But, it is more important to be nice.

What do you think?

December 3rd, 2014 at 09:16 pm

Today I went to the grocery store. When I came out, the car parked right next to me had a Vietnam Veterans tag on it.
I had some post it notes in my purse with flags on them. I left a note saying "Thanks for serving our country" Do you think that was ok? I am sentimenal over service people ( My dad was in WWI and WWII and served in the army for over 30 years)

Wrong day, wrong month, right year!

December 2nd, 2014 at 09:39 pm

How do you feel about late birthday cards? I got one today, December 2, 2014.
My birthday was Novmeber 23, 2014.
Now, I am grateful for every card I get, but I wonder why this one particular person is always so late.

I put my cards out to enjoy no matter how early I get them. (which is probably why I mail my cards a week early) This girl friend always sends my birthday cards late. She buys them weeks in advance, but never mails them until the birthday is passed!

What do you think? Do you save all your cards? Do you display them?

Who was President?

December 2nd, 2014 at 04:23 pm

When you were born? I thought that would be an interesting question to post!
For me, it was Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Who was your president?

An unusual Thanksgiving

November 28th, 2014 at 08:03 pm

We were invited to have dinner at a c ouple's house, Brenda and Dick, that we had never met.
My bridge partners, Jim, Carol and Peg were all invited.
None of us have any family to spend Thanksgiving with, so this couple thought it would be nice if she invited over people who were going to be alone on Thanksgiving.
My friend, Carol is a friend of a lady named Cathy from Florida (originally). Cathy is a friend of Brenda's and they "cooked" up this idea to invite those of us who were spending Thanksgiving alone.
Surprisely, we actually knew a few of the people that attended.
There was about 20 of us and everyone brought something for the meal. I brought two homemade egg custard pies. (My husband makes great pies)
We had a wonderful time and met new people. A nice way to spend Thanksgiving!!

Gone With the Wind!

November 25th, 2014 at 09:33 pm

In case, anyone is a big fan of the movie "Gone with the Wind" like I am, it will be on Tv all day tomorrow. It is on the AMC channel!

November 25th

November 25th, 2014 at 04:55 pm

Yes, just one more month til christmas. My husband started a tradition when we first got married, one gift for every year I was old. Of course, I had to get one for him and my daughter so they would get as many as I did. Wow, did we get a lot of gifts.
Thank goodness, that has slowed down. We still exchange gifts, but it is hard to find something we need. I give checks to ghe grandchildren and my great granddaughter. I remember how handy money was when I was in my 20's! (That is what my mother always gave me)

$20 challenge
I received a check from Chase credit card for $55 yesterday.

Prev. total $18,246.00
today 55.00
new total $18,301.00

Vanguard came thru!

November 24th, 2014 at 08:45 pm

My first check from my Vanguard IRA account was deposited into my checking account today. I asked for my withdrawals to start on the 20th of each month, but I guess they do not process checks on the weekend.
What do you think I am going to do with my first check? (It's $1000) If you know me well, you will probably guess that I am going to save it. Yes, it is going into another one of my mutual funds, actually more than one. Mutual funds are returning a pretty good rate of interest right now, much more than banks.

Today would have been my daughter's 45th birthday. She died in 2013. I remember how excited I was when they called me on my birthday, to say she was on the way. She was born at 2 a.m. the next morning. (She was adopted at birth)

It is a beautiful day today and I am very thankful.

1st withdrawal from Vanguard

November 23rd, 2014 at 04:47 pm

I checked my account with Vanguard. This is my IRA account and I am starting to take monthly withdrawals. I asked for my first $1000 withdrawal to come out on the 20th.
I checked my account Friday and it has been deducted from my account, but the deposit still has not hit my bank yet. I sure hope it gets there by tomorrow, which is Monday. Maybe the bank does not do automatic transfers on weekends?
