carpet or hardwood?

June 19th, 2011 at 08:55 pm

I have a question! If you were having a new house built, would you want carpet or hardwood floors? (or both) My house has hardwood in the kitchen and breakfast room and the rest of the house is carpeted.
The spec house that my husband is finishing, has hardwood in the living room, dining room and kitchen. We were planning on putting carpet in the bedrooms but the buyers asked for hardwood floors thru out. So my husband put down hardwood in the master bedroom and laminate in the downstairs bedrooms. You have to use laminate on concrete floors down in the basement. It is the first time he has used laminate and I think it looks nice.

We are going to start a new house this summer. Maybe we should make the floors all hardwood? What do you think?

I would prefer hardwood simply because carpets are such allergen attractors.

I've personally never had a house that has anything other than carpet in the bedrooms. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to it, but I enjoy having something soft to walk on when I get out of bed in the morning.

For the first time in over 20 years I have had carpet in the bedroom. It is nice having something soft and warm to walk on. I still wouldn't want to have it in my living room.

Hardwood! Because of allergies, and because it just looks really nice. You can always put down a nice soft rug in your bedroom. And a rug is easier to replace than carpeting...

If it were my house, I would put carpet in the bedrooms and hardwood only in the kitchen. I might put the hardwood elsewhere, but it would depend on the layout.

I personally prefer carpet, but I think hardwood is far more popular these days.

    But, I'd do carpet.

Hardwood. It's so much easier to maintain, especially with kids. The only thing is that it can't get WET (for very long anyway), so I actually wouldn't use it in the kitchen or bathrooms.

If it ever stops raining, we'll pull up carpeting in this older condo and put in Engineered flooring since hardwood is not recommended for this climate. We had laminate flooring installed in the kitchen 5 yrs ago when we 1st moved in and it has been easy maintenance. The original owner had Sears install quality, wall-to-wall carpet throughout before listing and I love it in the bedrooms. We will do the living rm, dining rm and two halls. I would like to do the stairs but the cost is astronomical. I plan to have the Lv Rm carpet cut and bound to use as an area rug in winter to keep the room from feeling cold.

Next summer I will likely have the bedroom carpeting replaced.

I'll suggest you choose both. Its very nice to have a carpet in your bedroom because its soft. Well about the dust and the dirt, We can use vacuum cleaner in that matter. Also in the room where you entertain your guests, carpet is very useful. But in the kitchen and dining room, you use hardwood, why of course the stains, it can't be on the carpet right? Smile

Definitely hardwood. I like using area rugs over wood floors, and that's how it is in my home; i have just one room with wall to wall carpeting.
