I can't believe the cost of groceries!!

August 30th, 2008 at 03:55 pm

I just came back from grocery shopping. I cannot believe the cost of food anymore!! We eat out almost everynight and I still spent about $80. I can't imagine what you must spend to feed children too.
Our local food bank is out of food so i am picking up some extra to donate. There is very little work here since our main industry is home building. There is none of that going on and so many new houses just sitting unsold!
I am so thankful that I have a good emergency fund to live on should we have too.
I did use a coupon and found hamburger on sale, so I have $6 to add to my challenge fund.
Prev. total $19,905.00
today 6.00
new total $19,911.00

Ima ~ I feed a family of seven and am simply stocking up on "buy one, get one free" items. Our menu has been very boring - I am sticking to cooking from scratch and can't wait until it is cooler so I can turn the oven on and bake in the afternoons! Our food pantry at Church is feeding more and more people as well. I am glad that I have enough money to feed my famiy!

I have started a grocery challenge to lower my food bills by 25 percent, then 50 percent. Our problem wasn't so much the cost of food, but not shopping smart, buying more than we could eat, and loading up the fridge and then going out to eat anyway. I too, will be donating to the local foodbank.

I can't believe the cost of butter & milk!

Here's a tip regarding Food Banks. They are much better off receiving money than food you purchase at the grocery store. I am very active in the local food bank and have learned that they can take your $1 and buy what would take you and I $10 to purchase. They can do this because they buy bulk and get deals from distributors and grocery stores.

So, give them $20 cash instead of $20 of groceries. They can turn that $20 into $200!!

In this week's flyer I saw "the real deal" pasta for 10/$10. I showed my wife and reminded her of the 4/$1 sales that I used to stock up on not too long ago. Then the deals were 3/$1. It seems I stocked up enough that I missed 2/$1 or even 3/$2. Now $1 a box is a deal?

They've taken our food supply and turned it into biofuel. What a disaster this will be in hindsight.

I meticulously check the sale circulars of 3 local food stores now and i pick the one (only one) with the best sales of items i normally would buy. When the price is right, i stock up, and i never buy any produce out of season now. My "deal" today was a whole watermelon for $3.89 and 3 cans of tuna at .77 each. Oh, and Pepperidge Farm was half price, so i bought 4 loaves of my favorite German dark wheat and froze 3 of them. When they're not on sale, i refuse to buy!

I saw an article on msn awhile back about "the savings account you can eat." Her point was that if you buy extra of staple items when they are on sale, etc., you can build up food stores just in case of something terrible like a job loss, the prices going up really high, or you have unexpected expenses that impact your food budget. I have been stocking up to the point that our limited space will allow us to do, but my dh and I were talking about getting some extra shelving to accommodate being able to do this. We don't really need anything fancy looking. Industrial looking metal or plastic shelving would probably do it for us. Perhaps this weekend I will go hunting at yard sales and thrift stores.
