A big waste of money!!

August 27th, 2008 at 03:10 pm

dh went to the doctor last month for a check up. The doctor suggested that he needed a colonoscopy and stated that he no longer did them. Dr. set him up with a specialist, and we went there yesterday. It was $140 charge just to become a new patient.
We see the specialist who says that dh does NOT need a colonoscopy for another 3 years. He only does them once every ten years if no polyps were found the first time.
So, we paid out $140 for nothing plus lost at least 4 hours of work!! grrrr...

Did the new doctor at least give him a check-up? If not I would be disputing that charge.

That's a tough situation, speaking from the doctor side of things. Was a history taken and physical exam done? If so, the $140 wasn't for nothing. It was the fee for the visit.

If absolutely nothing was done except the doctor walking in and saying he doesn't need a colonoscopy, I would call or write a letter explaining the situation and requesting a refund. You may not get one, but it can't hurt to ask.

Keep in mind that even if he did need a colonoscopy, it wouldn't have been done on the spot. It would have been scheduled for some later date and you still would have paid $140 for that initial visit when nothing was actually done.

Oh, I understand that Steve. Hopefully when he gets the procedure done, he will not have to pay that new patient fee. No exam was done.

You certainly shouldn't pay that new fee again, though be vigilant about that. Billing guidelines allow us to consider someone to be a new patient if they haven't been seen for at least 3 years. If it is more than 3 years when he returns for the colonoscopy, you should specifically request that you not be charged as a new patient.
