Feeding the deer

August 22nd, 2008 at 03:29 pm

DH brought home a big bag of corn the other night. We put it out for the wildlife to eat. We have a couple of groundhogs that live somewhere near our creek.
On Wednesday night, we noticed a deer eating it. Poor deer, it looks so skinny. We have not rained in ages so there is no grass. This morning, I woke up and there was a deer, eating it again. I just put out another big batch.
It is so neat to have wildlife right in your back yard.
Yesterday, I played mahjong almost all day and won 5 games. also, the stock market went up, so there is $6 to add to the challenge money.
Prev. total $19,861.00
today 6.00
new total $19,867.00

We have deers and other wildlife in our yard as well. But they are not skinny and go after our newly bloom flowers!! We are building a deer fence around our garden soon.

I am a closet wildlife-feeder, too. I don't feed them in summer as it seems they've got plenty to eat, and often wander down to my front yard at dusk to get the yellow apples fallen from the tree.

But i do often put food out in winter, especially when there's snow on the ground. Whoever gets it, gets it. It seems impossible that deer can survive our New England winters here. Surprisingly often i'll put out leftovers and i'll spot crows who get to it first. If i put it out at night, though, deer or woodchucks will get it. I think woodchucks only semi-hibernate.
