Back to being frugal!!

October 21st, 2007 at 05:15 pm

Well, I have certainly had about 10 days of not being frugal at all.
First of all i went to my class reunion in Florida, so I stayed in a motel and we ate all of our meals out.
Then, the car broke down and it took $1800 to get the fuel pump replaced. We also spent $300 on a rental car while we were there.
We had ordered a new car in July and it was waiting for us when we finally got back, so I put down a BIG down payment.
I always have a car fund that I contribute to every week. That is just part of my budget. I actually have enough in my car fund to pay cash for the car but don't tell my husband. He is very good with money except for his weakness with cars.
At least he is better than his younger brother.
All that guy talks about is racing. He goes to the races every week somewhere and all he watches is speedtv. (I would not have been married to him very long)
He also has 6 horses, 2 dogs, 4 cats, 11 vehicles, a boat and 2 ATV's.
So, it is back to be frugal this week. I found steak at Bi Lo on sale so I saved $4 which I will add to the $20 challenge today.
Prev. total $23,039.00
today 4.00
new total $23,043.00

I happen to believe that one big reason for being frugal is so that we have the money to spend on special things and emergencies and purchases that are really meaningful to us. For example, travel is a priority for us. If we weren't so frugal in our day to day lives, we couldn't afford to travel as we do. Rather than go and worry the whole trip about what it is costing and how much we're spending, we go with a clear head and enjoy ourselves because we know we've saved up by watching our spending in other ways.

So enjoy the splurges, deal with the unforeseen emergencies, have fun in the new Vette and keep living below your means the rest of the time.

Thanks, Steve, that is just what I intend to do. It is so nice to have the money saved for emergencies and splurges!!
We used to like to travel a lot too when I was younger. Cruises were our big thing and we saved up for them and never regretted spending the money. We have been on 14 cruises!!

I totally agree with you guys. Being careful with your money is all about saving on the unimportant stuff and getting the best deal on the things that are important to you. Cars are important to me, I'll spend major money on a SAFE car for the kids... but I still try to get the best deal on it, lol!

Good job having the money for the repairs and the new car! Can I ask how much you either put into your car fund monthly or what % of take home money... I'd like to share this on my website if it's okay... it's a great idea!

We always put nothing down and then research the best rate and price, seperately... I wrote a post about my email/fax game that I play to get the best price... I'll have to dig it up!

    Again, great job!

Well, I use to pay $400 a month for a car payment and $600 a month on some mountain view property that we had a mortgage on. I paid both of these off, so I continue putting $1000 a month into my car fund. I also put my $20 challenge money into the car fund, so the amount was up to $51,000. My home has been paid for, for years, so new cars are our biggest expense.

Ima Saver - I thought about you and your husband today when I was househunting! I visited an open house where the house itself was only about 1,600 sq ft, but there were 2 outbuildings and they had space for a total of 8 cars (or 6 cars and a shop, or 4 cars and 2 shops)!!! Made me think of you guys and your growing car collection.

I'm about to buy a new car myself. I've just been looking so far. What did you get?

We got a 2008 yellow corvette. We love corvettes and this is our third.

Cool. My dad had one back when I was a baby. I think it was white.
