I am over 70, but still feel like I am just 7. I love to go dancing with my wonderful husband of almost 40 years.Since we have never earned a lot of money, we have learned to take care of what we have. We live in the mountains in north georgia in a big beautiful house that my husband build and it is mortgage free. Now I am trying to save so my "younger" husband can retire someday.
Wouldn't be too hard to figure out. I spend $2.99 on a box of Revlon hair color. (I used to spend $6.99 on L'Oreal, but i decided "they're not worth it."
So for instance, if you color every 4 weeks, that's $6.99 x 12 months = $83.88 a year x 35 years = $2,935.
Just by switching to a cheaper brand and buying it at a discount supermarket, I save myself about $48 a year on hair color. Not to mention comparing that to a salon, which would charge, what, about $50??
I always look for the most inexpensive product I can get and try to combine it with a coupon and sale to get the absolute best price I can. However, hair color is not an area I can't do this as easily. I'm only 32, but I've been coloring since 24. My mom is in her late 60s and has colored her hair since her early 20s. She gave me one of the most useful pieces of advice. L'Oreal is worth the extra. I've tried every other brand to be sure, but nothing works as well or as long as L'Oreal.
I look for 2/$12 deals then combine it with a coupon. The last deal I did, I got 6 boxes for about $3 each.
EVERYTIME I get my haircut, the hairdresser can't beleive I color my hair. L'Oreal is definately the best and worth the extra money.
I have had my hair colored in salons and come home with scabs from them leaving it on too long. I prefer coloring my own hair. I have been using Garnier Frutis and it's pretty good. I bought the new one by the same company that says 100% color and I don't care for it. It fades too fast. The original one is best. I usually buy it as a buy one get one free and also use a coupon.
Aleta: I buy L'Oreal Preference. Everything wears off too fast. I would be pretty gray, but with L'Oreal I only dye my hair every 6 weeks. With others it's about 4 weeks.
My hair has been blond, brown, red, copper, borderline orange for so many years,I don't know how gray I am with out hair color. This month,it's blond. Next month, who knows.
I've found Feria lasts longest and tends to have the most solution for longer hair without having to buy extra. I haven't colored my hair since last summer and I can still see where the Feria ends and the uncolored hair begins.
I'm going to color it tonight or tomorrow, a nice golden brown. It should combine with my hair color to give me a nice brown with auborn undertones. My natural hair color is an auburn color but the older I get, the more brassy it becomes. And now I kind of have to color. I don't have a lot of grey but its all concentrated in the middle of my forehead in about a two inch wide swathe, nice skunk stripe! Not.

"All those years dyeing my hair added up to $65,000, not adjusted for inflation. If I had invested that money, today I would have $300,000, enough to pay for both my daughters to go to private colleges."

But yeah sounds like you have saved a ton staying out of the salon.
