Good bye to Lucy

June 12th, 2007 at 01:13 pm

We had a vet come to the house and put our dog, Lucy, to sleep yesterday. She was so weak and had not eaten in over 5 days.
We found Lucy in Jan., 1992. She was hiding in a barn, starving and freezing. I took food to her for about a week before she would let me get close to her. Finally, when the temp hit a high of 7 degrees, I decided to bring her home and find her a good home. That turn out to be our good home.
She had a wonderful life, no leash, no collar, no fence; she could do what she wanted. (lucky, we live in a neighborhood with very little traffic)
She pretty much stayed in the yard, but since my dh built many of the houses in the neighborhood, she would sometimes walk up the hill to visit for a while.

She was my first ever "outside" dog. But, I do not believe in leaving a dog truly outside all the time, so at night, she slept in the garage on her electric blanket. We got her a new blanket every year. Sometimes, she came inside, but most the time she like to be outside exploring.
Like the "Old Shep" song says, "If dogs have a heaven, Lucy has a wonderful home"
Goodbye Lucy. She was about 17 years old and will be sorely missed.

Sounds like Lucy had a pretty good life, thanks to you. What you said about 'no collar' reminded me of a friend of mine who had two cats upon whose necks she put these heavy collars which held the metal license/ID, flea collar, etc. She had them on very snug. Now mind you, these were indoor cats; they weren't allowed to go out at all. I suggested once they might feel more comfortable without that tight collar on, as they always seemed to want a rub, but as far as i know, they never came off. Ugg.

My thoughts are with you. It is so hard to say good bye to a beloved pet. Thank goodness for her sake you found her and gave her a good life.

Lucy is an important name in my family. It was my mother's name, and when my cousin named her dog Lucy, some eyebrows were raised. But she said it was the greatest compliment she could give, and I share her feelings!

She was named after the song, "Put your shoes on Lucy, don't you know you're in the city" It was popular when I was about 5 years old and I always thought it was funny.
She was a funny, happy dog!

My mother used to sing me that Lucy song when I was a little girl. I always thought she made it up. I'll have to try to find it now. I'm so sorry for your loss, Julie. I know how much you adore your animals and how much they adore you. But what a good life you gave her!

Julie- How lucky Lucy was, the day you and she found each other! I am sorry to hear of Lucy's passing...but I know that she had the happiest of doggies lives since 1992...15 years of doggie bliss!

Hugs to you my friend...I know that your pups mean the world to you...just behind that hubby of yours....and the loss of our pet is not unlike that of a family member.

Thank you all. She was a family member and i have very few of those. I lost my first Nicki on Feb. 15th, 1987. I lost my second Nicki on March 23, 2001 and then Lucy on Monday. They are all buried in my back yard near the creek, with their own little markers.

A little girl who just finished kindergarten heard about my loss from her mother. She came to my table last night at the restaurant with a picture she drew (with her father's help) of Lucy and gave it to me.
It is the first time I have had a colored picture on my refrigerator in a long time.

Julie, I'm so sorry for your loss. May you meet her again some day at the Rainbow Bridge. (If you haven't heard of it, the poem is below):

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thank you. I have heard that before and I have a copy of it. I got it when my last little girl passed in March of 2001.
