We hired a window washer!!

January 17th, 2007 at 07:53 pm

Get ready to spend some money, we hired someone to wash our windows and he is coming tomorrow.
Our windows are terrible. My dh pressure washes the house every year and we have real hard water. So there are water spots all over the windows. He tried cleaning them, and it would not come off!!
This guy swears he can get them clean. He did come out and work on the window that is on the back door. It took him an hour and a half for one door, but he got it clean.
He is going to charge us $20 a window and he thinks he can get it done in one day. I don't think so.
We have about 45 windows (and that is not counting the side pieces) so the bill will probably be over $1000, but it will be worth it to me.
But why does everything happen at once?? My taxes are due (over $3000), my house insurance is due (over $1100), car tags are due (about $350) and we just spent $1000 on repairs and new tires for the van.
I am just glad I have the money to pay for everything.

That's the way it is - when it rains it pours...

We have never washed our windows and we need to. We have eons of windows and I had a low quote for like $200 or something last summer. We really should do them in the spring - I think we have the money now - woohoo!

Tell us how you they turn out - how you like sparkly windows.

I know- everything happens at once. At least it seems that way. I try to look at it as at least I have the money to pay for everything- some people don't have any income coming in.

Probably too late if you have booked the window washer, but I'd have a go on one window myself and see how it goes.

Detergent will obviously get rid of greasy grime. But if it's hard water deposits, then vinegar (acetic acid) should help dissolve light spotting. I usually wash with one bucket of detergent water solution, then rinse off, then wash with a second bucket of vinegar in water, and polish the glass with scrunched up old newspapers the get that lovely "sparkely" finish.

You might also want to pay for a large container of distilled water for the final rinse/polish - there's not much point cleaning the windows thoroughly if you leave spots on them washing them with hard water also.

If it's really heavy deposits (unlikely, or your water pipes would be scaling up as well) then you'd have to get some hydrochloric acid from a pool supply shop - but this is extremely dangerous, so I'd go with the window washer in that case (although if it's that bad he probably can't help either).

In future I'd look at buying some cheap plastic drop sheets (we can get large 5m x 5m ones here for a few bucks) and getting DH to tape them over the windows BEFORE he does the next annual pressure clean! Otherwise, if having clean outside walls is going to cost you $1000 bucks to have the windows washed afterwards, I'd just skip the annual pressure wash!
