new restaurant

December 28th, 2006 at 04:16 pm

After 3 nights of sitting home, we tried out a new restaurant last night. It is a seafood place named Mike's and they allow brown bagging.
You have to stand in line to order your food and get a ticket with a number. Some young girls come out with your food and call your number. They went around the dining hall cleaning up the "dishes" Actually, there were no dishes, just plastic baskets and plastic forks and knives.
My husband was a little upset with the tip I left. I only left 10%.
I honestly feel that the girls working there were not working on waitress wages, which is $2.17 an hour.
I think they are making at least minimum wage, so I did not tip as much. (You get your own drink too there)
What do you think? We are going back tonight.

I agree with you. I probably wouldn't have even left 10%. The only time I leave a large tip is when I sit down and I'm WAITED on. If the meal is buffet style and we have to get our own drink refills then I usually only leave a dollar or two. IMO, if I haven't been "waited on" why leave a large tip? If a waitress walks around picking up plants, why should I have to pay her to do that? The restaurant should pay her...

I would ask the hostess (if there is one) or come straight out and ask the staff if the waitstaff are being paid $2/hr or minimum wage. Then I would base my tip accordingly.

I agree that the restaurant "should" be paying these employees a decent wage, but if they are not I feel obligated to tip my usual 20%.

I took your advice mariannej and I called the restaurant. The girls are getting paid at least minimum wage, so I did not feel too bad only leaving $2. Most folks left nothing. Now my husband will feel better too cause we are going to eat there tonight.

I only leave $2.00 at buffets because you are getting your own food, and, like you, I think they are making more than the $2.17 an hour.

You did the right thing, I do not tip on percentage but basically the service...some times I over tip
