Dropped off puppy

November 1st, 2006 at 10:32 pm

someone dropped off a puppy this weekend. It is a big puppy, bigger than my dog. Our humane society is full and won't take the puppy, if I could catch it, which I can't.
I thought it went away, but it only moved over to the vacant house next door and is sleeping under the porch.
It came to my back door today and it has lost so much weight. I had to go over and feed it. It won't come near me, hides in bushes, but I can't let it starve. I really don't know what else to do?

The dog is probably scared and disoriented. He may even be injured. You can gain his trust by bringing food and water to the porch area. Stay a distance away so that he can eat in peace. It may take a few days of feeding him to gain his trust enough to be able to touch him. Let the dog come to you. He may take your actions as possible aggression against him.

I am more of a cat person, and this is a method I use to rescue cats.

Oh, I feel for you. I agree with ETtoo; just keep feeding him and keep your distance until he learns to trust you.

I had a couple of young dogs hanging around the other day -- they both had on collars and tags, so they belonged to someone, but I couldn't get near enough to them to read their tags. They eventually ran off. I hope they went home.

It is so frustrating that the Humane Society is full. How are we going to take care of all these helpless animals? It just breaks my heart.

Maybe you could put a blanket or t-shirt next to the food bowl for him that has your scent on it, so he could get accustomed to your scent and associate it with his food. Poor thing. I hate when people abandon animals, but when they do it in the cold season, it just makes you want to lock those people out of their own homes with no food, water or shelter for a week and see how they like it.

if the dog seems friendly but just sacred i would continue to try to talk to it and feed it. I liked the suggestion of putting a towel or blanket out with your smell. the dog may just need to gain your trust.
