This little piggy didn't go to market!

March 14th, 2006 at 09:02 pm

I wanted to go to town today, but I didn't. It is pretty and sunny out, but oh so windy! I just stayed home and walked on my treadmill.
So it is a no spend day, which is a good thing. Since I am saving money in gas today, I can add that total to my challenge money. I have my challenge deposit all ready to go into my savings account tomorrow. Adding that dollar to my challenge money brings me to $4422.00 for the year.

New Menu

March 14th, 2006 at 05:06 pm

WE ate out at our favorite place last night and the owner showed us the new menu of the new restaurant she is opening about 2 stores down. It is going to be a tex mex restaurant, but there were plenty of items on the menu that I could eat. (I am a funny eater) Looking forward to having a new place to go that will allow brown bagging.
Monday is always a spend spend day. I cash the paycheck, fill my car up and go to the liquor store. Hope to get back on track today, but I do need to buy some hair conditioner!
Hopefully there is a crew working on my husband's new spec house. We have been waiting on them for months.

coin jar

March 13th, 2006 at 09:41 pm

Decided to take my coin jar to the bank, so I can add that to my challenge money. It had $81 and some change in it, so i added the change back and am putting the $81 in my total.
We had framers on our new spec house. we pulled the permit 5 months ago, today and this is the first time wood was being put on the house. Things take time here in the mountains.
Of course, it rained at noon, so they all went home. Maybe tomorrow.

Sleepless night

March 13th, 2006 at 03:59 pm

We got no sleep last night. The neighbors from hell came home. He moved in with grandma across the street 10 years ago and has been nothing but trouble. He was 15 then, he is almost 26 now. Never had a job, just slept all day and stayed up all night.
Kept all the big flood lights shining in our bedroom window all night, even tho we called a hundred times and asked them to turn them off.
His dog wrecked havoc with our yard, tore up bushes, scratched at the doors and windows and attacked me and my puppy whenever we went outside.
Three weeks ago, he moved out. But yesterday he came back with a moving van. They have been coming and going all night, doing what I don't know, but I finally moved to the couch at 5 am.
Hopefully, he will be gone for good, the house is going up for sale and maybe we will get nice neighbors this time!

Spring weather

March 12th, 2006 at 11:09 pm

Beautiful day here today, up to 77 degrees, unusal in the mountains. This is the warmest my house has been since October. The heat has not run in 2 days. We went to get something for dinner and spent about $8 at the grocery store. We will cook pork chops out on the grill tonight, plus I am cooking cube steak in the crock pot for my dh lunch this week.
Looking forward to having a mixed drink and sitting outside tonight!!

cruised town

March 12th, 2006 at 02:42 pm

Can you imagine someone my age crusing the town. That is what we did last night after dinner. Cruised in our 1933 ford victoria, called Miss Vicky, She is bright red and real pretty. Too bad she takes high test gas!

Free samples

March 11th, 2006 at 09:16 pm

I got my first free samples. I am actually excited. I got enough d/w stuff to do 3 loads of dishes and a sample deodrant that will probably last me a few months. Smells good too. I am only sending for things I know I will use.

$5 coupon

March 11th, 2006 at 06:47 pm

i recieved 2 $5 off coupons from my grocery store, Ingles. But I had to spend $50. So I added up my purchases as I shopped. I use to have to do that when I was young, only had so much money.
So with my advantage card savings, that came to almost $8. (I round up) I will add that to my challenge money.

Great free Gift

March 10th, 2006 at 09:37 pm

Under general discussions, a thread titled Great free gift, told how to own a piece of land in every state. It is only 1 sq. inch, but hey, it is free!! Cute idea.

First squirrel

March 10th, 2006 at 09:33 pm

My Holly (5 lb. toy poodle) chased her first squirrel today. I caught her before she fell into the creek. The day was so pretty I just stayed home and took a walk, so a no spend day so far. I can add a $1 in gas money to my challenge money.

Hawaii

March 10th, 2006 at 06:56 pm

Thanks to this site, I just acquired land in Hawaii, Alaska and California. The kind of land I like, no taxes, free land!

I have wheels!

March 9th, 2006 at 10:48 pm

Good news, I just got my car back a day early. My husband has not seen it yet!!As sorry as I am about the accident happening, I am so glad that I did not have to pay for it.
I got 2 $5 off cards in the mail today for my grocery store. Of course, I need to spend $50 to get it, but that is not hard to do if I buy meat.
Well it is time to go out tonight for dinner and celebrate!!

8 track player

March 9th, 2006 at 07:17 pm

Well the old vette got me to town and back safely. The clock didn't work and neither did the speedometer, but the 8 track player worked fine.(Anyone need to explain what an 8 track it)
I got to the bank and picked up a few things we needed at the grocery store. Since I did not go to town yesterday, I will add $1 of gas money plus I saved $2 at Ingles with my grocery card for a total of $3.

Car in, car out!

March 9th, 2006 at 04:05 pm

This has really been a fix me up car week. First we took the new vette in on Tuesday morning to have the bumper repaired and they still have it.
Yesterday my husband sat there for over 2 hours while they aligned his van. Today I had to take him up to a different places to get his tires rotated and the oil changed. It was $80 yesterday, I don't know what today's charges will be.
In the meantime, i have stayed home rather than drive our 28 year old vette. It has no automatic door locks, the radio baretly works, no automatic seats so I can see over the steering wheel and worst of all, No cup holder!! How did people get by without cup holders?

Car troubles

March 8th, 2006 at 09:52 pm

Well my husband took his van into the shop today. An alignment and something else, I know he spent $80, Now he has to take it somewhere else tomorrow to have the tires rotated. He is self employed, so he is loosing pay.
My car has been at the shop for 2 days and we hope to get it back on Friday. It won't cost anything cause the man that hit us is going to pay the shop directly. However my husband is already talking about getting a new car, cause he says the paint won't match and the car will never look the same. I hope he is wrong, that will cost us a bundle.
He has not washed the car since it got hit. I know he can not stand to look at it.
He has washed his cars every day or two since the first day we met.
I have not been to town in two days. I am afraid I will get to town and the car won't start for me, so I have just stayed home. Oh well, I save money that way.

lunches add up

March 8th, 2006 at 06:00 pm

I have to agree with Money talks$, buying lunch out can really add up. My husband use to have a crew to help him build, and everyone of them had to take an hour or more off for lunch every day. Not only did they lose that hour's pay, but they spent a minimum of $5 for a lunch.
My husband makes his lunch every morning. Very often it is left overs. If we find a roast or chicken on sale, we make enough for several lunches.
I wonder how much money we have saved over the past 20 plus years by taking our lunches? Even when I worked in a restaurant, I took a sandwich to work every day.

stay home day

March 8th, 2006 at 03:58 pm

Well, I stayed home all day, so i always add $1 to my challenge money when I stay home. I figure that I spend $1 going to town and back, a round trip close to 10 miles. (this was yesterday) I did book work most of the day. We did go out to eat last night as usual. It seemed so funny to go out in the old vette. It seems so small, the new ones are much bigger now. My dh said, did we really use to go on vacations in this car? We did, a lot of them.

Paying bills

March 7th, 2006 at 09:51 pm

I spent most of the afternoon paying bills for the houses under construction. Got everything done and another 10th of the month bill arrived about 4 pm. It has been lost in the mail. The city, state and zip did not show on the bill thru the little window.
Darn, now I have to get everything out again. I did get a check from home depot for an overpayment or something. It was for $10.75, so I will round up and add $11 to my challenge money.

28 year old car

March 7th, 2006 at 03:59 pm

Well I am driving my 28 year old car for the next few days.It is a pretty blue vette, but hasn't been driven 100 miles the past two years. I am a little leary of it, so I will spend most of my time here at home. I wonder how the old car likes this $2.50 a gallon gas? Last time this car got gas, it cost about $1.20 a gallon. Oh well, I will save money if I stay home this week.

card 12 days late

March 6th, 2006 at 10:38 pm

I just got our mail, it comes late. My friend sent my husband a birthday card and it came today. His birthday was Feb. 24th. Do you sent cards late? I feel like it is a waste of money. I put cards out to look at before my birthday, but after that I throw them away.
So she spent $3 on this card and I am just going to throw it away.
I have found my grandchildren don't card about the card, just the check inside. I buy my birthday cards at the dollar store for 50 cents each. Is that being cheap?

UPS guy

March 6th, 2006 at 08:53 pm

UPS guy came today, my husband finally has some dress pants and blue jeans that will fit him since he lost 35 pounds. I hated to spend the $95 but he has been looking like he is wearing someone's cast offs for months now.
I ran major errands today, bank, grocery store, liquor store, drug store because I might be without a car the rest of the week. We have 2 other cars, but I won't touch my husband's hot rod and the old vette is just that, old. I will take it to town if need me.
I had to buy some more prilosec and it was $5 off with my advantage card, so I will add that to my challenge money.

Save money eating out!

March 5th, 2006 at 08:02 pm

Just got back from Bi Lo. DH wanted to cook steaks out on the grill tonight. I spent $24 and I can eat out at my restaurant for $16. We also got squash and some cookies on sale. I saved $1.38 with my bi lo card and found a penny. I will add the $1 to my challenge money. I throw all my change (except pennies) into my change jar and I will add that total when I take it to the bank.
Spent $13 buying bird seed at Ace, but that is ok. I am cooking a roast in the slow cooker, so that will be dh's lunch for several days. It is too pretty to stay inside today. Let's all go outside and play!!

Puppy love

March 5th, 2006 at 05:43 pm

I am trying to type this with my puppy on my lap. Since she is standing up, this is not easy,
Need to got to ace and buy some bird feed, we go thru about 50 pounds a month. I know it is money but I love feeding the birds.
I will put a roast that I got for sale inthe crock pot for my husband's lunches. I will be back when i am not being licked to death. My puppy is almost 6 and is named Holly.

chocolate covered wafers

March 4th, 2006 at 10:34 pm

Boy when I read Flash's blog, I feel bad. I have not eaten a carrot in my life. I just bought some Murray's sugar free choc. covered wafers and they were great. My dh and I are dieting, but only about cutting sugar out of our diets. Wish I had her disipline! One thought though, I did buy the cookies on sale today to try them out.
I also did spend some money besides grocery shopping. I have a friend who is going to walk for breast cancer and she is asking for donations. So I dropped off a check where she was selling girl scout cookies and didn't buy the cookies!! I got the sugar free ones instead.

Back from lunch

March 4th, 2006 at 08:22 pm

Gosh I never have lunch out two days in a row, I feel like I have really blown it. I talk everyday on a local forum for our town and 2 gals were meeting for lunch and inviting everyone else. It was mexican and I don't like mexican food, so today they changed it and one e mailed me asking me to come. I had met her once and we hit it off. So I went and we all had a great hour together. But I spent $3.50 on a plain burger with water.
Did my grocery shopping for the week and only spent $40. I got a roast on sale and I will fix that with potatoes in the crock pot and it will be 3 or 4 lunches. I saved over $3 on it.
All total with my advantage card my savings today totaled $5.95 so I will add $6 to my challenge money.
I have signed up for some of the free samples here, but have not received anything yet.

Lunch for breakfast

March 4th, 2006 at 03:44 pm

Well I splurged yesterday, got a sandwich form blimpie with the thought that it would do me for 2 lunches. Well, I have just been invited to meet some ladies at lunch, so what will I do with my half sandwich. Guess I will just go eat in for breakfast. Can't waste that money!

Blimpies

March 3rd, 2006 at 08:52 pm

Ok, I splurged and went to blimpies. I have been wanting a turkey sandwich from there for ages. It cost me $3.95, but I will have half for lunch tomorrow.
Went to rite aid with a coupon to buy 8 light bulbs for $1, They were out and won't give those things, where you can get them later. I have never been good on coupons, so i can see that the early bird gets the worm.
I did go to Ingles and write down some prices so I can do some comparison. I got over $2 off my few purchases and I spent less than $5. I also stayed home all day yesterday, thereby saving $1 in gas, so I will add the $3 to my challenge money. (It would have been $6 if I had gotten the light bulbs.)

$3.15 an hour

March 3rd, 2006 at 02:16 pm

Reading Karensue's last post reminded me of when I worked for $3.15 an hour. We had moved to the mountains from Florida and neither of us had a job. My dh built our house completely my himself while we lived in a travel trailer on site. This was the first house he ever built (a lincoln log house) and he could not hire anyone to even help him lift the logs. He had to do it all alone.
We lived on our savings.
I looked for a job, but no one would hire someone who was not local.(I was used to office work)
Finally after 8 months, I got a job at McDonald's make minimum wage, $3.15 an hour.
Everytime I wanted to buy something, say like a paper back book, I would think how long I had to work to earn the money to buy that book.
I still try to think that way, how long does my husband have to work to pay for what I want to buy? Do I really need that? Yes, I am still guilty of buying things I don't need, but I am sure trying to get better.
You know what is getting to be the hardest? Buying things for christmas for each other. My husband is getting a $1000 tool he needs right now. wish I could give it to him for christmas, but he needs it now.

Pants fall down

March 2nd, 2006 at 07:53 pm

I am upset with myself not having anything to add to my challenge so I went thru my budget envelopes.
I still hae $120 left in my credit card envelope after I had paid my cc bill last week.
But I ordered almost $100 worth of new pants for my husband from Penny's. He has lost 35 pounds and kept it off this past year. When he gets dressed to go out and has not yet put on his belt, his pants fall down!
Plus they look all baggy, like he is wearing someone's hand me downs.
So I decided I had better keep $100 in my credit card envelope, but I do have the $20 left over to put in my challenge money.
